You really have got me perplexed now! The Motus I linked to has disc brakes and Nexus 8 (no mention of premium, though). Shimano must have enhanced their range - lots of Nexus for disc brakes. https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/components/urban/category/internal-geared-hub.html

I am confused now! What difference does "premium" make? And for this light use, does an Alfine make any real difference to a Nexus?

Meant to say, even going to the Severn Valley site is interesting for their somewhat unusual range of products. Thank you for that.

Thank you - I did look at Oxygen - having seen them mentioned frequently here. The obvious downer is not having in-hub gears.

Partner was loaned a low-end Coyote Connect ebike. Having tried it, she can't stand it! It feels wobbly. The brakes are rubbish. She hates the tiny wheels. And the riding position is hopeless for her - without sufficient possibility of adjustment or upgrading. But it did concentrate her mind...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

A family story - and I never did get to know the full details - when my sister was born in Malta, there was a six-penny charge "For Act of Birth". Always got the impression that she even had a receipt for it.

They could hold a referendum. In which case it wouldn't be the UK government making a decision, it wouldn't be Stormont making a decision, it would be the voters. Perhaps referendums aren't flavour of the month? Something to do with how they can be manipulated, how some camps might overspend...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

It has an awful lot to do with the current government which is, we are told, managing the leaving. In my view, governments can decide to profit from many of their activities and services. Obvious example include selling off spectrum for mobile phone usage. But there should be clarity. A fee -...

Boris Johnson 'hobbled by lack of Foreign Office power' Committee chair says trade, intelligence and development must return to FCO control <blah blah> There is also frustration in the Foreign Office that Johnson’s preoccupation with the Tory leadership means he spends more time positioning...

Mind, it sometimes appears that many in the tory party hate each other more intensely than those fundamentally opposed to that party and all who sail in her. So that choice of people to accompany him could be far from welcome. :)

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

Whilst freely admitting that I do not know the statistics, the losses that need to be covered could be very much greater than the simple kinetic energy of rider and bike imply. For a start, what if you ride directly into the path of a vehicle and their avoidance results in an accident?

    Brexit, for once some facts.

The BBC currently says: Brexit: I don't wish to be PM, says Jacob Rees-Mogg Well, for a change, there is a measure of agreement - I most certainly don't want him to be PM. In fact, I'd be rather happy if he disappeared to, say, Romania and we never again heard of him.

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

I agree that it is very questionable. It is, surely, death, injury and damage to property of others that is the primary focus of insurance? If I kill myself by bike, so be it. If I damage my own property, so be it. A slightly more nuanced response to injury - especially if the NHS decides that...

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

Just had a very quick search - some people saying they think they are already covered. Surely, that must be the case? At least anywhere that there are spectators or a vehicle could cause damage off the track. And things like rallies and Isle of Man TT certainly seem to have to be insured.

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

I am not at all convinced that number plates are necessary. At one time, yes, there was not the technology to do otherwise. Now, we could chip every bicycle. (Of course, there are arguments against doing that. Just identifying one option.) It still has the same gross unfairness that MIB...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

It sometimes feels as if there is an uncanny mapping between the two camps and the citizens of Besźel and Ul Qoma (The City and the City). Could we actually manage half the country remaining (or leaving) and unseeing the other half? Looks like a plan... (I feel a blessed relief at unseeing...

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

Can't help feeling that insurance is a good idea for all road users. I don't want to expose myself to a very heavy claim - and, more importantly, I don't want others to not get compensation if I cause damage or injury and cannot afford to pay out. A partial answer, which obviously would not...

Typo there. Shouldn't be " a " in there. ;) For those who don't remember, Blue Streak was basically a failure. However, in cooperation with Europe, it eventually helped to launch the European Space Agency. Wiki says: The de Havilland Propellers Blue Streak was a British medium-range ballistic...
