    Brexit, for once some facts.

I think I have the explanation. Tillson had a flurry of posting no less than eleven times in this thread on the 31st December and then stopped. I'm guessing that tells us what his New Year's resolution was. :) .

It doesn't amaze me, the answer is that the public in general lacks a memory and only sees what's in front of its nose. In the days of the gross abuses of workers, of course they supported unions. But once the unions had achieved the better conditions and abolition of ill treatment, there was...

I notice we are missing Tillson who last posted several times in this thread on 31st December. He'd normally have been in the wind turbines discussion, probably calling them windmills as he was wont to do. .

Ground sourced ones are partially geothermic, those in a few new London houses are for example. The pipes carrying the liquid go down six metres into the soil where the ground temperature is appreciably warmer. That's then compressed to raise the temperature further to make it useful. I've...

Yes they did deny it at the time, probably to avoid the EU investigating on the grounds of an illegal subsidy. The government offer wasn't illegal though, since no payment was made or to be made before leaving the EU. .

That's local and I'm aware of the issues with that scheme. But I was speaking generally and what I posted was true. The tide is for all time and it is an unconditionally green power source. Whether the infrastructure to utilise it is green depends entirely on design and location of course...

Nissan Funding I cannot believe how stupid our government is. They've uttered an empty threat to cancel some forthcoming funding that was promised in 2016. That future funding was for the new Qashqai and new X-Trail to be made in Sunderland. Nissan have cancelled the X-Trail commitment but...

Difficult and expensive as it's installation by property for heating purposes. OK for heating houses at the cost of a big house price increase, we have a tiny number of new geothermally heated houses in London since our high property price market can stand the extra cost. Not so acceptable...

Honda might, since they don't enjoy the largest of sales here, but I think Toyota and Nissan would favour moving manufacture into mainland Europe since their volumes would justify it. Now that the EU has that free trade deal with Japan Europe might see Daihatsu return sometime. They...

100% agree. Harvesting tidal can be very costly, even much more than nuclear power. But it's well worthwhile since it's totally green, utterly reliable and permanent for all time. Everything else is daft in comparison. .

Long ago now Dave. As you know boat is spelt w.o.r.k. so I eventually packed it in when I spent more time maintaining than enjoying. .

Don't discount electric cars and home power packs, aka Powerwalls, where storage is concerned. As electric cars are being taken up more rapidly, these will play an important part in energy supply. 1) In Denmark they take advantage of their e-car's batteries by charging at low night rates and...

So does mine, but we are a small minority in Britain. There's nowhere near enough renewable availability for anything but a small part of the population. It can peak at 25% when all conditions are right, but is often down to under 15%. The problem is that the bulk is wind generated that only...

But as I posted, only if there's the sales to justify making it here. In that respect the X-Trail hasn't done well. Add to that the fact that Nissan are going to be very late to the hybrid party with none so far, so prospects aren't strong in the face of hybrid experienced competition that is...

Although it's the desirable choice, future is the operative word, we are very many years away from being able to only have renewables. Meanwhile nuclear is the sensible choice to avoid more climate damage from burning fossil fuels. That has to be minimised. .

Indeed, there's large transmission losses sending electricity over long distances. And our lack of winds in the south has left us with land based capital subsidised wind turbines that only have a shocking 8% utilisation. .

Meanwhile it's stored carbon anyway, which is no bad thing. .

Nissan like the rest of the motor industry here uses whatever propaganda it can to discourage leaving the EU, so the timing of this X-Trail decision announcement was for that purpose. The decision itself was only due to the combination of dieselgate and the poor showing of the X-Trail in...

True, but they are time limited and very weak. I remember only too well in 1976 during my boating years just how weak they were then. Certainly not a national power source. I'm not against wind power, but I think we in the UK are in danger of becoming over reliant on it with inadequate backup...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Agreed, but it'a hollow argument when the wind isn't blowing. Back in 1976 when we had a high over Britain for four continuous months and we were largely windless, we'd have been in a hell of a mess relying on wind turbines back then. It's on the backup that we are falling down. Very flat...
