I expect the reason being is, the BBSHD is designed for high amp output so running at very low amps battery energy is being wasted. The motor is running at less then optimal performance and most likely not as efficient as it should be .

If old one is good and you alternate them daily/weekly or what ever the routine they should last a good few years. With my batteries even if left for a short while I always leave at about 37.5 - 38.5v and charge the night/day before use.
