If you are really careful with your probes you could test via an open controller on the appropriate hall connections, tracing the 5 thin wires will be easy to there pcb connection. You won't get hurt but if not careful you could short the controller.

You shouldn't have any issue I don't believe with any hub working with your controller, however if it comes to it finding a controller will be easy. Usually with controller the only issue is matching to a compatible lcd display of the same make if using one.
