The relative price of a battery can be expensive though if used regularly every week for 3 or 4 years then you can deem it as a cheap and inexpensive power source and you will have certainly got your monies worth form it.

It does appear that SOC isn't 100%, to over come this they spec and use a bms with lower balancing voltages. Also I suspect the lower discharge voltage level is higher .

For commuting the hub motor will give a more relaxed and leisurely ride also will be good for light off road trails and old railway routes. If off road use it a bit more adventurous for harsher terrain/ rough down hill then go for a crank drive.

It is straight forward the motor wheel will fit straight in and you just fit all the parts and plug them in no wiring to fiddle with. Repairing the original wire cable isn't straight forward and can prove pig to repair.

The only thing from your description I can think of is a hall or phase wire connection issue. Check the motor cable joint is mated tightly together and if that doesn't work check that all connections from the motor wire are tight where they connect to the controller, could be a bad wire...
