    Does bicycle weight really matter?

I'm not speaking of the kit which followed years later, so long after many gave up on it ever appearing. I'm speaking of the complete bikes they sell by electrifying very light roadie bikes with the Tongxin nano motor and their software. And I do know who bought them. There's no wicked humour...

    Does bicycle weight really matter?

Well, Cytronex have now been around for about six years with light, low assist and even smaller battery bikes up to that price and dearer. Clearly they've sold, and from some of the early buyers I know that many were actually roadies who wanted that help option. We had three members who fitted...

    Does bicycle weight really matter?

I don't think that's the point though Eddie, they are not in competition since they are not at all the same thing. As I posted earlier, the Coboc at 13.5 kilos with a small battery and moderate motor is an out and out roadies bike that happens to have some electric support. That enables an...

    Does bicycle weight really matter?

The Coboc isn't part of the usual e-bike market and I wouldn't expect it to be priced to compete with the mainstream. It sits more comfortably in a separate specialised market that's currently occupied by Cytronex and the like. These bikes are primarily enthusiast rider's road machines, but...

    L1e-A testing requirements

It's the power without pedalling that's the problem, 168/2013 excludes exemption. That leaves only L1e-A for such a bike. As you say they don't want to alter 168/2013, which in this respect has existed since 2003 in the original type approval regulation 2002/24/EC. I think their attitude is...

    L1e-A testing requirements

The wording is a bit muddled, but I'm sure they basically mean that pedelecs are in the clear, and also pedelecs with a throttle that is only active while pedalling or pedal thrusting from a standstill are in the clear, remaining as bicycles. Those with a throttle that acts without pedalling or...

new bottle battery has arrived from germany but how to store

Just give it a short top up charge, say 30 minutes to see if it charges ok and doesn't need to be returned. Then charge at least once every two months, though monthly won't harm it. There are recommendations for storing at 20 or 30% charge, but that really is only a benefit if the battery is...

Is global warming the con of the century?

What the changes are is still in question, but changes there certainly are. Whether the changes are entirely, partially or only slightly caused by human actions is also still in question. Only time will fully answer both those questions. But meanwhile like KudosDave I am somewhat suspicious...

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

Yes so, you are misunderstanding the position. It's the petrol energy that put the kinetic energy into storage, there is no other way it can get there. e.g. To glide down the hill you have to climb it each time to get up there. To get energy from braking you have to get up to speed first...

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

The same on my plain petrol car, but frankly I drive it as I need to to fit the circumstances and not by staring at the consumption bar. That's economical driving and as said, I can get 47 mpg that way, but I don't accept it's good driving. My overall average is a fraction below 30 mpg, the...

    First Recorded Hoverboard Death.

He's only partly right, EN15194 doesn't permit use, it only specifies suitability for acceptance. What he should be saying is that his seatless scooter is exempted from Type Approval Law 168/2013. That does not mean it's not a motor vehicle though, since a national government can consider it...

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

That's very good and not too far from Toyota's 68 mpg claim. But a large number of Prius drivers are down into the 40s and could do just as well or better with a diesel. The ex-Top Gear motormouths got 37 mpg. Even my 1600 cc petrol car does around 47 mpg with careful driving, though I don't...

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

Yes, that's why I quoted a new Leaf getting as little as 60 mile range in adverse circumstances, when the air-con, demister, headlights, wipers etc are all competing for the battery content. Although I like the i10 it's not a prospect since I'm entirely happy with my present car, and fuel costs...

    Mystery creak solved :)

The other creak source I had a job to solve was the junction of new handlebars with the central clamp. Even when very tight the bars were able to very minutely tilt in the clamp, causing the alloy interface creak. .

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

That's a thought, an e-hearse would be an ideal e-car application since they don't need much range. .

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

You'd probably have to sell on the lease remainder with the car with the agreement of the car maker. Either that or hand in the battery and pay the difference for the shorter period. If buying an expired lease car, you'd need to either buy a new battery or sign up for a battery lease agreement. .

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

I think after 8 years of the battery performing trouble free you can be forgiven for forgetting what they were. It's a pity they aren't up to the full e-car application, nothing really seems to be for one reason or another. The sodium salt batteries like those in the Smart and Think e-cars are...

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

Thanks Croxden, but as you say, being a hybrid it's not comparable. Also the battery technology is very different from tjhe Leaf's lithium since your car has Panasonic cell NiMh batteries, and Toyota have fully justified their 8 year life claim, as yours shows. I've had the same experience...

Difficulties getting an e-car, Part 2

Trouble is I'm running out of time. It's a race between the improvements in e-car economics and the undertaker! .

    L1e-A testing requirements

I hope i'm wrong, but I've felt all along that this will probably be the outcome. Since the EU hasn't had throttles since 1999, in effect ever, since e-biking hardly existed before that, I don't think they even understand our obsession with them on EAPCs. .
