Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

I agree, and that's certainly been the case in Germany, the home of the S bike. But we sometimes seem to have another sort of user in here, those who buy 1000 watt or even 2000 watt machines of the sort that Frank at Xipi sold. That's more the user that Dave's suggestion would suit. I don't...

    Who's Kalkhoff UK

Unless there are presentation changes afoot. Kalkhoff long ago took over distribution in the USA themselves as the Kalkhoff USA company, and in the latest very recent change it's now Kalkhoff US/AUS as this site shows. Kalkhoff is just a name anyway, the company is Derby Cycle Werke Gmbh as...

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

Also EAPC in the UK, EPAC in the EU. I agree with what you say about fitness to ride and have made the same points myself previously. Fundamentally the law permits some electric assistance for a cyclist, which means they have to be capable of being a cyclist in the first instance. If they...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

The S riders expect to input pedaling so they make up the difference. See my last post above, the S class market has settled for moderate power for a low weight and longer range advantage instead of brute power. P.S. I dont think factor 4 is an influence in this, the trend was clear from the...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

Of course it seems S class riders don't really want such power. Germany struggled against the EU for a quite a while before being able to get permission for the S class to have the permitted power rating to be upped from 250 watts to 500 watts. But as things have turned out, there was little...

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

I don't think we should ever speak of legal electric bikes, since that still implies motor powered with no mention of pedalling or assistance. Somewhere either assist or pedal should be included in the name to avoid misleading others. .

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

Indeed, or even just as electric bicycles. And that omission of the vital word "assist" is big problem. We are all guilty of this at times and really should stop giving them the incorrect name, since we are just misleading others. The only truly permissible names are: Electric assist...

    Who's Kalkhoff UK

This second post by Aftersales Kalkhoff UK indicates that this is also 50cycles, the UK Kalkhoff agent. Director Tim Snaith most commonly posts for them, but maybe he's on holiday at present. They reopen on the 4th January. .

are 700c and 29e rims the same , does 29e tyre fit 700c rim

That's no problem at all, one popular e-bike a few years back came with Kenda 700c x 1.95" tyres on 19mm inner rims. At 50mm tyre width, that's just over 2.5 times the inner rim width and it was completely stable. If you look at the recommended widths on the chart below, you'll see that 50mm...

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

I strongly disagree, it's not semantics, the whole point of a pedelec in law and in fact is that it is not a motor vehicle. It's a motor assisted bicycle, remaining a bicycle in every way with power only applied through the pedals. And that is how they should remain, as normal bicycles. That...

are 700c and 29e rims the same , does 29e tyre fit 700c rim

700c, 27", 28", 622, 29er are all the same thing in rim terms, only the overall diameter of tyres or measurement methods make the difference in naming. 700c overall tyre diameter in mm with a slim tyre. US and UK term. 27" is with a very skinny race bike tyre. 28" with a larger diameter...

One of the reasons that I don't buy cycle related magazines.

We had a classic illustration of this with the original eZee Torq back in 2006/7 in this forum and beyond. Very popular at it's introduction, the Torq was owned by 38% of forum members declaring their bike make and model. Very fast with 22 mph assist and a peak power measured at 1000 watts, it...

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

Well said KudosDave. When someone expresses a wish to go up steep hills with little or no pedal effort, the advice they should get and I've sometimes given is that an e-bike/pedelec is simply not suitable. They need as much as 3kW to do what they want, depending on their weight and hill...

One of the reasons that I don't buy cycle related magazines.

The trouble is that when one manufacturer makes such a wild claim in advertising, their competitors feel obliged to do the same or lose sales. The Bosch and Yamaha claims you provided Eddie are both quite positive and might be challengeable in law by Trading Standards or the Advertising...

Well, he might have tried it out briefly, but the figures he gave clearly didn't result from that. Such brief trials can't result in a valid opinion anyway. It takes more than a day to properly judge an e-bike's worth, two to three days in my experience and A to B in it's long review history...

Bonkers, clearly written more from guesswork rather than actual experience. Typical of today's journalists, given a task they look it up on Google and Wikipedia and then copy what they've read, including sales spiel. .

Looking to make my daily commute as easy as possible

Sites claiming all manner of illegal things are legal on the road are commonplace unfortunately. Any police check would probably be initially by trying it themselves. Many of our police forces have trialled e-bikes and a few forces routinely use them, so they are familiar with what is legal...

Looking to make my daily commute as easy as possible

If the changeover is under the rider's control, these are also illegal. The DfT call this an "off-road" control and have said they are definitely banned. That advice was contained in a guidance they issued to police forces in April 2013.
