    Grandma sucking eggs

So easy to do. I once had the unpleasant experience of a battery overtaking me down a bumpy hill, and crossing onto the other side of the road. Luckily there were no vehicles coming the other way so I only had to repair the split casing by heat welding the plastic and applying duct tape strips:

Clacking noise - Kalkhoff Impulse 2 motor

I can answer these questions John, and Tillson who also posted them. I can state without fear of correction that they haven't sold any and therefore haven't experienced a single failure. ;) .

That's why they officially abandoned this forum in the first place long ago, overwhelming criticism. They did get a few things wrong but also many things very right, but as ever it was the wrongs that were emphasised. It's also why few of the trade still post in here now, a far cry from when...

    variable regenerative braking

That will be it Rob, the Panasonic rear hub motor is definitely a DD motor with regen and braking. It would be difficult to design, but there could be a market for a freewheeling internally geared motor that had the ability for the rider to lock the internal freewheel to get regen and braking...

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

He may not be, bless him. I'm not sure of the regulations for e-powered toy vehicles, probably the same as those for pavement mobility chairs. It seemed similarly slow and makes the same whine as the toy e-cars that many kids have. .

    variable regenerative braking

No, it's an internally geared BPM-CST motor on the MTB Rob, not Direct Drive. .

    A-Bike Electric *finally* arrived!

The wobble is probably in part due to there being little gyroscopic element with those tiny wheels, plus the fact that smaller wheels lead to "faster" steering. i.e. Twitchy. And the cobblestone like discomfort is inevitable as such tiny wheels will pick out every small undulation. The...

Clacking noise - Kalkhoff Impulse 2 motor

They can't say that, their first was the Panasonic Will folder, using the same motive unit system as the Giant Lafree Lite which beat them to it to these shores. Same e-technology. When they eventually returned to handling crank drives in October 2007 with the Panasonic unit powered Kalkhoff...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

On the evidence of my eyes I doubt that. The female cycling commuters I see mostly try to ride as fast as the male bike commuters, which in London is typically hard pressed riding at 20 mph or near. So I can't see 15 mph e-bikes putting them off. Of course we seem to have cracked the female v...

    variable regenerative braking

Trex is absolutely right about the DD motors that these systems use. However, the Bionx motor can climb quite well on it's level 4 power setting, but at the cost of a shortened range. Owners report about 18 miles on their largest battery in mixed territory using this setting when necessary...

    variable regenerative braking

There have been a few Paul, but since an e-bike's mass regenerates very little, when judged by that factor they haven't been popular. Panasonic did recently introduce one front hub motor bike with a full acting braking motor, but it's never emerged from Japan where it had a 3000 bike trial...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

I agree on the usefulness in traffic, and have found the same myself. But that's rideability. I still say throttles have done us no sales favours on the facts. The Netherlands have over ten times our e-bike sales with just over a quarter of our population, and all are pedelecs. Germany also...

Clacking noise - Kalkhoff Impulse 2 motor

You're right John, this is what Aftersales Kalkhoff UK posted: "Of course we care we have been in business since 2003 and was the founder of modern electric bikes with crank drives in the UK. We now have over 20000 customers in the UK all of which are kept happily on the road without fail. You...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

I don't think our proportion of elderly riders is any higher than in The Netherlands for example, where they commonly ride into their 80s and 90s. Of course the need is perceived to be higher here due to our terrain, but I am still sure this market will disappear as it did in the much hillier...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

The whole issue of having throttles will disappear. The mainland EU haven't had legal independently acting throttles since 1999, some 16 years, with the result that no-one mentions them or feels the need. Since all new pedelecs will not have throttles from Friday this week, the same will...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

I think our "UK Off Road, S-Pedelecs and Overseas" forum confuses the rider types by lumping them all together. There's a world of difference between the enthusiast cyclist who wants a degree of assistance with roadie speeds and the person who wants plenty of power to drive a bike at 30 mph or...

Is it a Pedelec or an e-bike?

This can no longer be legally used if a bike made and sold after 1st January 2016. The 6th April 2015 change was an amendment to the old EAPC regulations and not a supplement, having the effect of banning independent throttles in the interests of compliance with EU wide type approval law...

    Newbie

Just about any electric assist bike will do the distance ok, but has the route got genuinely steep hills or is it moderate or flat Kenyon? Also what area are you in, since it's best that you are able to try out an e-bike before buying. That information will help us recommend the most suitable...

Hung for a sheep or lamb.....

I should be even more embarrassed. Having owned a legal Giant Lafree, the second e-bike I bought, though nominally legal, peaked at 1000 watts and assisted to 22 mph derestricted . And of course like everybody else, I derestricted it. However, ultimately it was the least used, no longer owned...

    Who's Kalkhoff UK

Mind you, if they are trying to mislead they are doing a lousy job of it. They've given the points of contact as 50cycles website, a 50cycles phone number and the 50cycles Live Chat facility. Not exactly stealthy! .
