    The lost Malaysian airplane

It's transpired that the co-pilot had been hiding a serious depressive illness and was actually signed off work on the day of the flight. He had torn the sick note to shreds which were found in his apartment and gone to work anyway, and apparently that wasn't the first time he'd done that. It...

    The lost Malaysian airplane

Yes, air marshals can be a good solution, Israeli airline El Al has an armed air marshall on every flight without fail, and they've successfully prevented hijacking attempts. Not perfect of course, what happens if the air marshall goes nuts with his gun, he's human too? .

    The lost Malaysian airplane

Of course we used to have three in the cockpit, which was much more secure. The third person was the flight engineer, a post done away with for economy reasons. There is still a third seat in there on many planes, indeed my sister who was an airline employee often used to do her personal...

Certainly such things are possible, but also far too dangerous to implement. Both would make remote terrorist attack possible, given that there is no such thing as perfect security. .

    The lost Malaysian airplane

And yet on long-haul it is perhaps the most boring job on earth, endless hours on autopilot with virtually nothing to do. Jim Zockoll, the founder of Dynorod was a Pan Am pilot and dreamed up that business while flying, following a blocked drain incident at the hotel he stopped at between...

    The lost Malaysian airplane

There is an override outside, but the pilot in the cockpit can delay it five minutes, this for anti-hijacking reasons. Having an immediate override would just increase hijackings again, some like 9/11 with suicidal intent. I'm afraid this is a "between devil and deep blue sea" situation, there...

    The lost Malaysian airplane

Two in the cockpit at all times rule is an obvious answer and after this latest incident must surely become the international standard. This is the fourth suspected incident of deliberate downing of an airliner for other than terrorist reasons in very recent years. This link refers .

Ah, but it's not a Moulton. They are a bit like Morgan cars, unique and rather special. As nice as a Kalkhoff may be, it's not uniquely special. Just looked at some Morgan prices, the Aero 8 costs new around £57,000 depending on version, but a second hand one at three years old is on offer at...

    Cycling Near-misses

I agree that when good cycle lanes like those in Milton Keynes exist, they should be used. But it's a fact that they are an exception. Throughout my area I have numerous cycle paths, but the majority are substandard and unusable by those with narrow road bike tyres and some are unacceptable...

Hardly a "shopper" bike, this Moulton model is a very serious and capable bicycle. They are used on long rides as this account clearly shows. The OP's request is on this link before the spam posts. .

    Jeremy Clarkson Suspended

Having previously dipped in on odd occasions, "Top Gear" definitely wasn't for me. However, I was perfectly happy for it to be on since I'm all for free expression and dislike today's PC attitudes. But there are a very few things that merit an employee's instant dismissal. They include...

Where do you 'mount' your battery

I think a rear hub motor kit like a BPM/CST with a rack battery-integrated controller, all added to a similar traditional diamond frame bike would look about as good. .

Where do you 'mount' your battery

We had the same problem with many of the i.c. cycle motors of yesteryear, as the photo below of a BSA Winged Wheel kit's rear-rack petrol tank shows. It's the bicycle that's the problem, nowhere to put such things while fully keeping the bicycle appearance. Giant tried with their twin slim...

    Cycling Near-misses

As well as the reasons that 4bound gives, there is also a political reason for keen cyclists using the roads. There is a real and possibly justified fear in cycling circles that a government might make it compulsory for cyclists to use cycle paths where they exist, thus seriously limiting their...
