    power assist?

The throttle on the Kalkhoffs is only a walk-alongside one, active at walking speeds only in accordance with EU law, so of no use to nanny ogg. 50cycles Jarifa e-bikes are also pedelec only. The BPM motor is not a minor upgrade against the Giant Twist, the latter being one of the lower powered...

    power assist?

The Claud Butler will probably be a little more powerful than the Twist, but there are far more powerful alternatives. The Woosh Big Bear in step-through or crossbar models uses the very powerful BPM hub motor, as does the Kudos Tornado. Both those are very strong hill climbers compared to the...

    FIA Formula-E championship

Sorry John, but that social media aspect does spoil it for me in the way that the excess of silly features has ruined F1. What is wrong with these race authorities? Can't they just let cars and drivers race on equal terms? That worked for over 70 years and was infinitely more entertaining...

    Kalkhoff Battery issue

The capacity is the total of the cell makers marked cell capacities, this is what Derby Cycles have to say about two of the Kalkhoff Impulse batteries, the 11 and 15 Ah ones: 50 Cells | Type 18650: 10 Cells serial à 3,6V x 10 = 36 V 5 Cells parallel à 2,25 Ah x 5 = 11,25 Ah 5 Cells parallel à...

    Kalkhoff Battery issue

The 15 Ah is the cell manufacturers stated maximum capacity for the parallel total in the pack, something I have actually checked on one of these BMZ made batteries. The BMS in the battery has upper and lower charge state cut off points. The upper point is set to cut before the absolute...

    Slung seat post

This one is not cheap, but it's brilliant at what it does and far better than any of the simple pillar type: Suntour SP12 NCX Seatpost The 28mm Marathons were probably a mistake, they really are very inflexible. If yours are the Marathon Plus version in that width, you'd be just as...

    Bosch bearings

Which are far from being fully effective, trouser clips still stocked and selling in consequence. I didn't say this was a reason for Bosch to adopt a smaller chainring, I listed it among others as an incidental welcome advantage and have repeated that since. In that respect it does have...

    Bosch bearings

Well, I've linked you to those who can suffer the chain off problem and assure you that it is not uncommon in normal unpowered cycling as well as in various e-bikes, not just Bosch and not just crank drives. It's far more common with derailleurs and is caused by a variety of conditions which I...

    Bosch bearings

But as I've posted, implemented by Bosch not particularly for bicycle reasons but for e-unit efficiency. The chainwheel motor drive units like the Bosch have been suffering some loss of efficiency due to the multi-stage gearing necessary to reduce the motor speed to the very low chainwheel...

    Bosch bearings

The stain on clothing problem is sufficient for cycle clips to have been marketed over the life of the safety bicycle, but even they are not foolproof. I've got oil marks on trousers from large chainwheels even when using them. As for the chain coming off the chainwheel, it's common enough for...

    Bosch bearings

I strongly disagree on points 2, 3 and 4. Chain jumping off is a well known and very inconvenient phenomena with large chainwheels. It will be near to impossible for this to happen with the small chainwheel due to the much sharper link angles not allowing the necessary twist. The soiling of...

    Bosch bearings

Some technical reasons and consumer advantage apply with this. Firstly the smaller higher speed sprocket means less gear reduction necessary within the unit, increasing efficiency. Second, there's very much less chance of a chain jumping off the chainwheel. Third, soiling of clothes and legs...

    Cycling in London (again)....

And here in London we have had Mercedes hydrogen powered fuel cell single deck buses running since 2004. At first it was a trial of three buses from 2004 to 2007, but then from 2010 to date more have been bought, bring the total to eight, all running on route RV1. The latest double deckers...

Indeed, and the Panasonic units having sealed into the crankcase and heavily encapsulated electronics are designed not to be repaired. .

    Bosch bearings

Perhaps not lifetime, but I do think Panasonic should have provided a phased replacement cost to follow the two year warranty. Very low cost in the third year through to full cost at ten years perhaps. That would have been more acceptable than the flat £500. .

    Bosch bearings

TBH, those who've bought second hand Panasonic crank unit bikes usually haven't even known the spares situation. I think Panasonic's decision to design as a sealed for life unit is realisation that most bike dealers simply aren't able to deal with such repairs, especially on the electronic...
