I have been asked by a couple of friends where does it say on the internet that 250w is ok for a solo bike and the law as we know it. E.U./ U.K. law

There you'll see both the 200 watt UK and 250 watt EU references, both applicable in the UK but in different ways.

There's also the type approval law which exempts up to 250 watt pedelecs from motor vehicle type approval:

2002/24/EC

Scroll down to Chapter 1, Article 1 (h) which is under the "does not apply" heading.

Consider, if you will, the number of people who must have been involved in drafting and translating that directive, and the cost of the same.

Then multiply that by the numer of EC directives ...

Our UK laws are just as bad. Bureaucrats operate to the dictum, "Why use a sentence when a whole paragraph will do?"
