Sorry for my newbiness but what's so special about the crank drive? Isn't the standard kit from Hong kong as good? (or better?)

Just the fact that it drives through the gears, making it better at handling steep hills or very heavy loads. The standard Oriental wheel hub motors are effectively like cars stuck in a single high gear, ok on the flat but not so happy when a steep hill comes along.

Ok thanks for the explaination Flecc. As long as it goes fast and is not too heavy, hub motor (it's direct drive I suppose?) is fine for me.

Hub motors are fine for most people, they often are more powerful to make up for the lack of a gearchange option anyway.

Some like the BionX are direct drive, motor running at wheel speed, but most have internal epicyclic gear reduction from a faster revving motor, still only the one gearing though. Here's pics of a typical hub motor's core and hub shell with it's internal toothed gear rack at the rear:

Very interesting conversion kit, ground clearance looks particularly good.

It's interesting to note their concerns about not upsetting the balance of the host machine......then they go and spoil it by suggesting mounting a 25 amp-hour lithium lump on the rear carrier. I can't see any provision for a pedelec sensor, it appears to only have throttle control.

Perhaps with a little refinement some of these issues could be resolved. The brushed motor could be tamed by using a 10 amp controller from a Synergie Mistral, this would also allow the fitting of a pedelec sensor as well as a throttle. The modest demand of the Mistral controller would also permit the use of a much smaller and more manageable 10 amp-hour battery, perhaps mounted low down in the frame triangle, Bosch fashion.

Winter project?....anyone?
