OK i don't want to be a boy racer and i know that i will cut down on the miles i get out of my battery but i would like to know if i fine out how to derestrict my e bike would it give me any more power to clime hills. Or does it just make me go faster on the flat because as this battery on my bike age's in a year or two i wont get up the 3 hill home i just about make it now with two lights out four and that with a good battery.

It varies from bike to bike. What bike do you have?

Derestricting your bike may or may not give you any more power to climb hills. It depends upon what is restricting the power in the first place.

It could be the rate the battery is capable of giving power out, or the rate the controller allows current through to the motor, or the amount of power the motor windings can generate with the voltage they are being given.

Restricting a motor is usually effected by reducing the voltage to it, the maximum amps demand remaining unchanged. De-restricting may give the impression of increased torque, but in actual fact, only the maximum possible speed for a given voltage increased.

Volts = speed
Amps = torque (pulling power)

Typically, a Suzhou bafang 255 rpm motor in a 26" wheel will acheive 17-18 mph at around 39 volts. Some set-ups incorporate a 5k or 10k variable resistor which can be used to set the maximum road speed to which the motor will assist, usually 15.5 mph. Where a machine is fitted with an 'off-road' or 'sport mode' switch, the variable resistor can be switched out of line, and allows the motor to run at it's maximum voltage related speed.

In answer to your question, de-restricting your system will not increase the hill-climbing ability, only the road-speed to which the motor will assist.

Hope this helps

Bob

I agree with Bob a speed restriction is usually effected by restricting the voltage given to the motor.

The maximum amount of power (and hill climbing ability) you can get from the motor is often restricted by the amount of amps the motor can be given by the controller.

Some bikes (e.g.cyclematics) can have their hill climbing ability improved by adding solder to the shunt in the controller and increasing the amount of amps the motor can draw from the battery, thus making the motor more powerful

Thank You for your replies the bike i have is a Oxygen and De-restricting is not going to solve my problem. But i i have noticed a drop in battery power over the last 6 months of course this is due to the charging and discharge of the battery. I have three hills to clime to get home all was OK till the beginning of June this year when i notice that i on longer could clime the three hills with anything lower than two lights out of four. I will have to look again at what is best for me to buy in a e bike even without power on the flat it has a lot of drag because of the rear hub motor so i think i will have to sell it and go for the Kalkhoff Pro Connect.

Since you are asking about de-restricting your bike for use on public roads I assume the legalities don't bother you all that much.
Two points.
If you are a licence holder for another type of vehicle (car, motorbike etc) and you are prosecuted for illegal use; unlikely but... you risk losing that licence. If you need that licence at work...? I'm sure you can see where that goes. So, not risk free.
That being said, if hill climbing is your thing and being legal is not that much of a concern then the Alien Aurora would appear to be a better, cheaper choice than the Kalkhoff.

Try a far lighter and more powerful Bosch crank drive bike as well...

I take it that the bike used to meet your requirements when new? Just get a new battery or re-cell the old one.
