A lights query for those that know........
Front light works fine, but rear light B&M Selectra doesn't always come on and when it does doesn't always stay on.

Oddly it often seems that I check behind, see it's off apply the front brake and it usually comes on, but not always. Checked connections and doesn't seem to be anything amiss.

Any ideas?

A loose connection or broken connection or cracked mudguard.

Check the connections first. On the mudguard you will find four small copper holes - two where the lights wires enter and two near the motor. These usually have a small black plastic cap to hold the bare wire in contact with the copper rim. Check these haven't fallen out or that the contact is still good. A drop of WD40 can help. Check the muguard for breaks as the copper contact wire for the lights runs inside the mudguard - if this is broken your dealer should replace the mudguard under warranty. The light itself can be checked by connecting it briefly to a 9v battery - if it lights up straight away and then stays on - then you have a poor connection somewhere in the wiring. Pulling the front brake probably compresses a broken contact somewhere and hence the light works again - temporarily.

hope this helps

i have this on and off all the time, drives me nuts because i'd be very happy with that being my sole rear light, but i cant trust it. It seems to be working now.

One poster mentioned shorting and wiggling the mudguard helped the current flow.

Another mentioned water issues. Sealing the wire areas solved the problem.

Yours does sound loose connectionee.

Thanks Citrus and Eric,

I'll check the connections again. I usually ride with a smaller LED rear light on my reflective belt as well but still I'm not sure about the mudguard as part of the wiring thing. I'd have thought that it adds extra connections which can all be weak points. I'll also consider re-wiring straight through or perhaps forego the rear dynamo light in favour of a rack mounted battery one.

My Tasman arrived with a broken rear mudguard (possibly I broke the wretched thing getting the bike out of the box, they are amazingly fragile). The rear light works fine though.

As for getting a new mudguard under warranty, good luck to you. I have been trying since May.

Hi Iain,
Have you tried contacting Lloyd directly on lloyd50cycles@gmail.com ?

He has been brilliant in responding to my emails and replacing a couple of broken items within days of me contacting him ( stand and chain guard)

My Agattu had clearly taken a bit of a bump whilst it was in the box and arrived with a broken reflector at the back, problems with the rear light and a somewhat skewed mudguard. I managed to sort out the skew and rear light myself (with the help of my multimeter) and 50C sent me a new reflector once they got back from the show and started responding to their emails again.

The lights problem in my case was a short circuit somewhere in the mudguard which stopped the front light from lighting and made the back light run on batteries all the time. I managed to sort it by slicing through the metal tracks on the mudguard after the light connections (disconnecting the unused bit at the end)

Hello

Thanks for the reply.

I have been dealing with Mark Hubbard, Technical manager 50cycles. If he is away I get completely ignored. Same difference, mind.

I used a CTC co-axial dynamo lead kit to wire direct from where it comes out near BB area to the back light, ie instead of using mudguard as part of system. Rear light now seems to workfine.
