Sorry if this has been posted before, but its the first time that I have seen it. I can't decide if it's a good idea or not. Getting the thing to activate, without fail, every time that it is required is the difficult aspect of the design I would think. If that has been overcome and it is not susceptible to inadvertent activation, then there could be some merit in the design. I'm sceptical about this combination being achievable though.

Me too jbond, life has risks so I accept them.
.
Very true. The trick, of course, is to strike a balance which mitigates and manages those risks with an acceptable level of interference on life.

I'm another

I'm with you guys. Knowing the risks and understanding the ramifications of cycle accidents, I somehow still cannot convince myself that I should wear a helmet.

Of course, I would never laugh nor sneer at any of our helmet-wearing brethern but while I was riding along the Grand Union towpath yesterday, slithering from time to time on the mud and leaf mulch, it occurred to me that I never see any cyclists wearing life-jackets although I'm sure there must be recorded incidents of watery mishaps involving canal-side cyclists.

As Flecc says, there are risks yet many people still smoke, including some cyclists I'm sure. I was one of those for 42 years though, thankfully, I've gone off them and don't do it any more.

They look horrible to wear, a helmet is hot so there's no way I'm wearing a large scarf round my neck. A few things make me think the story is rubbish
  • It's in the Mail
  • It's designed by students
  • The article implies that helmets are a legal requirement in the UK.
So despite the law many people carried on not wanting to wear cycle helmets, and this is the same not just in Sweden but in places like the UK too.

That crash test dummy would have also benefited from protection at the genitals level...must have pretty sore private parts judging by the slow-motion shots :p

I propose full body protection (LOL, note the missing in-between-legs element :D):

The inflatable helmet reminds me of the serious design for an inflatable biker jacket a few years ago. Thankfully that was never taken up by anyone.
I had images of hapless individuals being bounced off their bike and rattling around like balls on a pinball machine.
