Any thoughts on a clicking/rattling sound

Hi all,
Just about one month into life with the Agattu and still loving every minute. However, I have noticed a clicking/ rattling sound coming from the chain or motor when the power is on, most pronounced when climbing steep hills in a high gear, with the motor under a bit of pressure, though sometimes I can still hear it even on the flat. I have checked the chain and the links are fine. The sound is constant and irregular as though the gear hasn't quite engaged and the chain is 'bubbling' on the sprocket, or something like a twig is caught in the spokes (there isn't!) When I turn off the motor it quietens down or disappears. . I am worried that it may be getting worse. Performance isn't affected, just a little annoying. Lloyd at 50cycles is on the case, but I thought I'd widen the query and check if any other Agattu owners have had the same experience.

I dont have an agattu but i get a similar problem on my three speed nexus hub,it seems to happen on fairly steep hills when trying to change gear, the panasonic motor seems to continue to deliver some power for about a second after stopping pedalling, and requires a longer gap between pedalling to allow the gears to change properly,i find sometimes i have to stop and restart to remedy the problem.

Like Paul I have a suspicion that it's the gears not fully engaged or running very slightly out of adjustment, this causing the sort of continuous ticking you describe. You might find a very slight adjustment in either direction on the gear cable adjuster will find the silent sweet spot one way or another.

Gear hubs take a little while to settle in, and the cables stretch a bit initially, but once settled can run for a year or two without any adjustments.

Thanks guys,
I suspected as such but worried that it was something more sinister. Pardon my complete ignorance but where is the gear cable adjuster located?

From memory, at the cable exit from the twistgrip on the Agattu, if you screw the bolt like part where the outer cable inserts it's threaded and screws in or out to legthen or shorten the action. Only try very small adjustments, a little bit at a time, checking after each, first outwards as that's the most likely, but if not, the other way, to see if one position gets rid of the sound, leaving all gears accessible.

How to adjust the gears

Make sure you are in the 4th gear. Look down at the hub and you should see two yellow marks - these need to be lined up. Now go to back to the gear changer and where the cable comes out there is an adjuster - turn the adjuster until the two yellow markers line up. Seems likely you have had some initial cable stretch and hopefully this should stop the clicking noise.

PS post crossed with Flecc's....

I have had the same problem with my Agattu and the yellow markers are slightly out of sync which is probably why I have difficulty engaging in a lower gear. How do I align the markers?

Just use the cable adjuster as described Wallie, and the marks can be lined up by that adjustment.
