Oh dear it would seem my batt. has given up the ghost only had the bike since last sept. couldent ride it cos the weather was very inclement so kept charging the batt. every 2-3 weeks for the last 6 or so months and now it wont hold a charge for more than 10 mins it would seem i will have to pay out another £280 for a new one having only ridden less than10 miles (groan)

Alien did have a bad batch of batteries some while ago and Bob there changed the faulty ones promptly. I think you should get in touch with him since you have obviously been charging regularly. Not being used doen't hurt these batteries just so long as they are charged, as you've been doing.

From last September the battery is only six months old and hardly used, so claiming is definitely justified.

I'm glad they are having a look at it, hopefully they'll replace it for you.

Hi again just a thought but there might be another little spanner to throw in to the works i.e charger, after using the bike before christmas of last year i duly topped it up at regular intervals and then as i said every two to three weeks untill the present day but i did notice thinking back on it now , that each charge took about the same amount of time but as i was just topping up from short rides i thought nothing of it so i may have another suspect in the equation .....never rains but it pours !

Not necessarily. The BMS in the battery uses some current all the time it's out of use, so the charge drains continuously. Therefore the charger must make up for that as well as any used on short rides.

So don't worry abut the charger, it's almost certain to be ok. Even a faulty charger won't harm a lithium battery, it's the battery's internal BMS that switches off charge when the battery is full, regardless of the charger.

It could do, but that amount depends on the design of the individual BMS circuit in the battery. The lithium cells themselves lose no current, it's just the current used by the management circuit which is effectively switched on all the time.

The expensive but smart Panasonic unit battery switches off it's own BMS after two weeks of not being in use, but that's a bit of a luxury.

BMS = Battery Management System. It controls the charge and evens out the charge into the cells to ensure the battery is balanced. When the battery is full, it cuts off the charger input. Then the charger senses no current is being taken and indicates charge is finished.

Bad BATT. no GOOD BATT.

Glad it's sorted now and Alien came good once more. Hopefully many trouble free miles in prospect now. :)
