Bar End Mirror

Can anybody recommend a decent bar end rear view mirror. My internal tube diameter is 14mm.

Unfortunately, I purchased a cheap one at Halfords, it didn't fit, so I spent an hour modifying it only to have the entire clamp mechanism disintegrate when I tried to clamp it up. Accordingly, the item has been tried and convicted of gross inadequacy, and sentenced to the dustbin for eternity.

I don't mind paying reasonable money for a good one, as I feel my life could well depend on the function a mirror provides.

Here's one more vote for the Mirrycle, but we're also big fans of the Zéfal Doobak for "straight" MTB-style bars

Thank you Flecc,

Had a quick gander, they all seem to be for 18mm to 20mm bars. I don't know how standard my bars are, but the internal is only 14 mm as they are quite thick walled. Do you reckon the Cat Eye 500 would fit? I can't find any firm fitting sizes on the blurb.

The topic of recommended mirrors comes up frequently and most critical reviewers seem agreed that the Myrrycle product and one or two from Cat Eye are the best bet.

I have only ever fitted the former to my swept-back, Dutch-style bars and all I can say is that if I somehow managed to break it tomorrow, I'd buy exactly the same product again. It's excellent and I'm fairly sure it's possible to buy only the lens part as a spare, should it be needed.

I think the Cateye 500 one will fit, the insert is very slim. Many cycle shops stock them, even Halfords at times.

I think the Myrrhcycle was a gift from the 3 wise e-bikers. The other two were the frankincense derailleur and the Gold brake pads!

Thank you all very much for the suggestions. Excellent advice as always. Looks like its a Cat-Eye 500 or the Myrrhcycle device.

And perhaps not the ideal solution if you don't wear glasses whilst cycling
Well, can't argue with that ! On the plus side its very easy to transfer from bike to bike

1. Ensure glasses on face
2. Get off bike 1
3. Walk to bike 2
4. Get on bike 2

in all seriousness i wear photochromatic glasses while cycling just about all the time. The wind makes my eyes water if I don't. Or the rain/sleet/snow I'd rather hits my glasses rather than my eyes. And occasionally, just occassionally, the sun actually comes out and they reduce the glare

Hi Eaglerider,
My Beaprint bike is identical to the Freego bikes like yours and I recently fitted a Mirrycle mirror in my right handlebar end and I have been very pleased with the fit, quality and functionality of the mirror.
The access to my garage is narrow due to the Caravan parked on my drive and the mirror swivels 180 degrees inside and above the grip so it does not bang on the house wall.
When I go off again I just twist back into position and off I go.
I definitely recommend the mirrycle mirror - I bought mine from Amazon.
Barry.

Hi KirstinS,
I agree with you, I purchased some pretty cheap eye protector glasses on Amazon 1 set clear and 2 of different sun shade types. They wrap around my head and are worn to protect against flying stones, bugs and rain, bushes near the road etc.
On one occasion on a cycle path a sparrow flew out of a bush right into my face and the eye protectors really helped!
I wouldn't want to cycle commute without wearing them!
Barry.

Thanks everyone. Mirrycycle thingy ordered, fingers crossed.

Looks like there might be some E-Cycling weather this weekend! Yippee!

I always wear protective glasses, a thrash round the chops with a stray bramble can be very nasty!

Myrrhrrcycle thingy review.

Well it arrived, and I have successfully bodged it on the bars without breaking anything.

Several features are evident, a proper glass mirror thats really shiny, good quality fittings for the price, (I was hoping for milled Titanium), but most satisfactory nonetheless.

The upstanding radial arm has been cast with a particularly pleasing triple concentric ring design that lends a certain Dalek perspective to the whole edifice. It's going to be a hit with the Ladies for sure.

Highly recommended, thanks to all for the info.
