Battery charging confusion???

I was always led to believe that you connect the charging leads to the battery, and then plug the charger into the wall socket and switch on.

Then I read this thread on E.S. and now I'm a little confused on which way round is the safe way:

I do get a few sparks on my Ping charger/battery connection when joining them, but nothings been damaged or blown up yet

Which order do members connect their chargers to their batteries?

I always plug the charger to the battery first: Sometimes with the charger plugged into the wall socket & sometimes not, but Always with the socket switched off.

On both chargers I use, the charger led comes on, then I switch on at the wall socket.

I'm pretty sure that was the instruction that came with my chargers.

I do it whichever way is most convenient; however, I blew my Ping charger when it was plugged in to the mains but not the battery. I picked it up by the lead to plug it into my battery when it started making a crackling noise and then a lot of smoke as the capacitors blew. I'm not sure if the mains plug was fully inserted because the noise was the same as when you haven't fully inserted the pug in your PC monitor.

No, more of a buzz followed by a fizz and then a lot of expletives.

You surprise me Dave......but I know what you mean .......my Poms simply HATE it when I try to plug them into my laptop........

To me it would be safer to plug the charger into the battery first then plugs the charger into the mains. That's what I do. There is always a small spark but nothing major and it hasnt damaged any of the connectors.

I think if you plug the charger into the mains first you could be more likely to get a surge of power and a bigger spark when you connect the battery
