My BBSHD has 8 of these M4 threaded holes on the back of the output gear.
They are going to be very handy for me for fixing a new bracket for the old-fashioned chain guard that goes with my bike.

But I'm stating to get curious - what are they for?
I presume Bafang did not go to the expense of drilling and tapping these just for fun.

It seems they are "blind". They've been drilled and tapped in one part. I's not another part at the bottom of them.. or is it?

Does anyone care to speculate?

Perhaps someone who has disassembled one of these can shed some light on the matter?

Hm.. that's a thought.
I know I've seen a picture of something like that, but I cant find it right now.

But I guess these guys might be using those holes.

But I've seen no such thing during my bbs-research and a quick google turns up nothing likely to use these holes.
If they pay to have these holes made, you'd think they'd sell a chain-guard themselves...

I was thinking it could be some sort of extractor arrangement. If there is an internal, hard to dislodge part, you could insert screws to loosen just like a pedal arm... Seems a bit far-fetched..

Or maybe they are used during manufacturing to fix the part for machining.
But why so many in that case, and why not a custom fixture instead. Would be cumbersome to insert and unscrew all these screws on an assembly line.

Perhaps if I knew the right Chinese search term to use it would all be obvious :D

Could be for manufacturing, the Chinese have to find employment for the population, having a gang of workers making these holes, then another doing whatever, another finishing will give employment to many.

Just pick up any mass produced Chinese product, the amount of small parts required is unbelievable, that is just something like a novelty pen that lights up....well you know what I mean.

Try posting your questions over on Endless Sphere. They are more into the technical side of the BBSxx's than we are, so may have some answers.
