Bearprint hub motor casing

Hi everyone! This is my first posting here, and I am hoping that someone out there has the answer to this one!

We bought a pair of Bearprint folding electric bikes about 3 months ago, and think they are great. However a problem has developed, and it seems that Bearprint have disappeared so i cannot ask them.

The hub motor is made by Suzhou XiongDa, and has a casing in two parts which look like they screw together. The problem is that it seems that the casing end has come unscrewed slightly, which means it moves with a clonk on every turn of the wheel. The end casing can be moved easily by hand through about one degree of rotation, and wobbled from side to side. This clearly won't do it any good in the long term. I have tried screwing it tighter, but it wont shift at all. It is as if the casing end screws into something inside which has come loose.

Does anyone have any experience of this sort of problem, or any suggestions to offer?

Hello there, you are the 2nd Forum poster after myself with a Bearprint Ebike!
I am afraid I don't know the answer for your technical problem - I am pleased that I have found another Bearprint owner.
They are really generic Chinese ebikes much like the Freego and Juicybike so parts should be easily available if you need some.
It is a shame about Bearprint going under, they didn't offer me much help with my recent electrical problem but I found a local Freego dealer who very kindly agreed to try and fix my problem and did so very well for a price.
Since then I have been back to commuting to work 26 miles a day and have now clocked up about 7600 miles since October 2010.
Overall the bikes seem solid and dependable as long as you maintain them like any vehicle.
Good luck with your hub issue - try a Freego dealer - in the worst situation you may need to replace the hub motor or back wheel + motor. Freego have a complete parts list with prices on their website.

Thanks for your help. Its great that there are people out there with answers. If I cannot fix the motor casing problem, I will be off to my local Freego dealer, who is quite close to here.

I'll post if I do solve the problem as it may help someone else.

From the motor description it sounds as though it may be the one used in the Cyclamatic, from memory of other mentions about those. Maybe a Cyclamatic owner has some information which might be of use to you.

Hi again,

I have solved the problem! The end of the hub motor casing does indeed screw into the rest of the casing, but is prevented from turning by a tiny grub screw hidden under a blob of sealant. Once I found and removed this, the rest was easy! Four experienced cycle mechanics as well as myself missed this, so it certainly pays to have a really good look at these things.

Congratulations Alan . There is a lesson for us all that goes way beyond electric bike hubs. Sometimes an amateur can achieve things that a professional can not. Why is this? Well it is all about mind over matter, or as near to psychokinesis as you will get in the real world. You achieved the impossible, simple because no one could be bothered to tell you how impossible it was. I am assuming from your description that the grub screw could not be refitted. So if it comes loose again, put some thread lock on the threads.

Bearprint hub problem

Hi again,

I though I would update on the motor casing issue with Bearprint. I have now tightened up the end of the casing using locktite, and it has stayed put all summer. We have 2 of these bikes, so I checked out the other one. The casing had been moving about, held only by the grub screw, for so long that the threads had worn away. It would no longer tighten up at all, so I had the thing welded up. It means I cannot now access the inside of the motor, but I don't suppose I will ever want to.

There's nothing special about the motor. If anything goes wrong in the future, you can replace it with any one from a range of standard motors for about £100 to £150. You can often pick up a whole bike with knackered battery on Ebay for about the same cost, and take the motor from that.
