I've been thinking about buying a bike stand to do work on the bike when I suddenly realised I had all the bits I needed to make a better one.
I screwed a couple of pulleys into the ceiling joists of the kitchen and simply hoisted the bike up - attached to the seatpost and the front of the top tube - works a treat and cost nothing. It's a heavy bugger with the hub and even with no batteries in place, but I can have it at nearly any height I want for working on it in comfort.
