Thought I would do a short writeup on my experience with Bionx PL500 HS XL.
I live in Switzerland and decided to have this kit fitted to my Koga Miyata World Traveller.
I have had the kit fitted on the bike for 6 weeks now and I am generally pleased with this kit although I did not fit it myself.
The kit states 80Km distance and 45Km top speed. So I decided to do a test last week and here are my results. I live 42 Kms from work so I decided to cycle home with the Bionx on full power to see how long it now takes and how well the Bionx performed.
Normally it takes me 1h 45mins to cover the 42 KM distance on this bike. I fully charged the Bionx battery and I did the trip in 1hr 10mins. This is with the full power
engaged for the whole journey and peddalling as fast as I could without stopping on the journey.
My average speed for the trip was 35Km/hr which I was pleased with and a top speed of 50Km/hr acheived on a large downhill section. The roads were single track car backroads.
Upon reaching home the battery was completely flat ( giving up actually as I entered the drive^way to my house. This is not a hilly ride by cycling standards but there were a few hills that I was pleased that I had the kit installed. So the battery life is actually 42KM rather than the 80 stated in the documentation.
The only problem I have with this installation is that I have a problem with the relaced cassette. After a few weeks the freewheel starts to stick to the point thatyou are unable to stop pedelling else you have a problem with the chain.
The supplier has changed the freewheel 3 times. Firstly he stated that it is a bad batch of freewheels going around. At the last change he told me I needed to have special high temperature greese in the freewheel which he has now done. SO now I wait to see if this is the issue. I have my doubts.
Was wondering if anyone else has had any issues like this fitting freewheels to a bionx kit.
For anyone thinking of purchasing the high power Bionx kit I can certainly recommend it. It performs well, is well made and fun to drive.
