Good afternoon,
First off can I say fantastic site,
Community looks excellent and I'm looking forward to taking part if I can.
I'm 31 with a young family ex Soldier who has piled on the pounds since leaving, work on the ambulances now, living in a village near Skipton called Bradley if anyone knows it.

Looking for a commute to work aswell as pleasure /fitness.

Being on the heavier side roughly 100kg 5ft9.

I was looking to buy a bike for around £1000 using the bike to work scheme offered through the NHS. Whom I work for.

But I have a saracen mantra sitting in my shed collecting dust, and have seen some decent buys on hub motors,
Looking at a front hub motor for ease of building and to split weight up.
Bike has hydraulic disc brakes front and bike and 24 gears with good front suspension.

Commute will be from Skipton to grassinton in good weather, very hilly around 25mile around trip but have the facility to charge at work, I work 12 hour shifts at least..

Trying to keep costs down, and looking at battery's are lead acid a no no, due to the range and weight.

Any other advice you guys can throw my way.

Thanks for reading

There's plenty of options with rear motors, but if you want a front one, you're power choices will be limited. Don't get tempted by the Ebay 500w or 1000w direct drive motor kits. The last thing you want to do is put one of them in a front wheel. Even a rear one is not what you think. It won't give any more power than a 250w one at legal speeds.

Hi d8veh I was more concerned about my weight plus the bike weight.
Is it much hard to change over to a rear drive, does it mean sorting all gears out etc as I'm pretty useless

I never had any trouble. Are your gears free-hub (spline) or free-wheel (threaded boss). If you don't know, count the teeth on your top gear.

Not at home at the minute so unsure will check when I get back.
I bet your not as heavy has me though buddy.
I just don't want to fork out for 250w if I'm going to need to adjust and upgrade.
I get the 250w would be easier on the battery's and range etc
