By the time it gets built (if ever) that question will be obsolete
It will never be built, there's no possible economic case in the foreseeable future.

This government announcement is probably to deter thoughts of Scottish independence with something tempting for the future if remaining in union. Scotland couldn't contemplate the cost of building it themselves.

I don't suppose for one minute Boris thought of asking the people of Scotland if they had any use for such a thing?
Frankly as one of them I have no idea why we are supposed to want one!

And this from a Scottish Engineer.

That's not bad. The death toll from healthy living is 100%.
.
But it has the advantage of usually occurring at the far end of life rather than by Express Delivery long before then.
personally I am prepared to be patient, having survived attempts by the NHS to get rid of me.

Trump has is obession with walls and Putin built the 12 mile bridge to symbolically link Crimea. Johnson has delusions of grandeur (World King kind of thing) and wants things to impress the big boys as if nukes and aircraft carriers aren't enough. Channel tunnel is now an inconvenience, so I suspect an Irish bridge is something to dangle in front of the Irish to keep them sweet and to bamboozle EU negotiators with.

Something else is perhaps happening that requires them to invoke a panic?
At last, some explanation:

The UK’s decision to declare the coronavirus outbreak as a “serious and imminent threat” to public health gives the government fresh legal powers to forcibly quarantine people and send them into isolation if they pose a threat.
The PA Media news agency reports that the decision was in response to one of the Britons who returned from Wuhan in China, the centre of the outbreak, attempting to leave isolation at Arrowe Park hospital on Merseyside.
The news agency cited a government source that “there was someone who was threatening to abscond from Arrowe Park”.
All the Britons who returned on the evacuation flight signed a contract agreeing to a 14-day quarantine period, which ends this Thursday. There were concerns, however, that those contracts were not legally enforceable, leading to the new regulations.

You must be joking.. If by Irish you mean RoI forget it, and EU negotiations ,why would it matter?

Well you no doubt voted for boris because of his obvious intellectual prowess (cant imagine as a tory you'd let something as deplorable as ethnicity cloud your judgement) and see what it got you?
From the BBC.

South Korea's Parasite made history, becoming the first non-English language film to win best picture since the awards began 92 years ago.

The US live TV audience for the Oscars fell to an all-time low on Sunday.

More specifically the Unionists as a carrot that they are literally connected to the mainland - and Johnson has a certain fondnest for muttering vague grandiose technologcal solutions for just about everything inc. housegold Rolls-Royce mini nukes as well as flogging around the world mini-fusion plants Hi mate Trump and his accelerated return to the moon by 2024 and 2000 mile wall wants to leave legacies to be remembered by.

BORIS Johnson compared himself to the mythological Greek god who was cruelly punished for giving fire to mankind in a speech at the UN.

Good. American movies are too commercial and the less Brad gets a podium to comment on world events the better. A little integrity is refreshing.

Michael Gove admits Brexit will bring years of confusion at borders as trade checks imposed

Realities of leaving single market and customs union revealed to businesses - after controversy ducked during election campaign

Michael Gove has admitted to years of confusion at Britain’s borders because of Brexit, with goods checks now “inevitable” – but a new IT system not ready until 2025.
In a speech to traders, the cabinet office minister laid bare the realities of leaving the single market and customs union after the controversy was avoided during the election campaign.

Warning “almost everybody” who exports to the EU will face new barriers, Mr Gove highlighted checks on food and goods of animal origin, customs declarations and the need for safety and security certificates.
“You have to accept we will need some friction,” he told businesses at the London event, adding: “We will minimise it, but it is an inevitability of our departure.”

The Freight Transport Association raised the alarm after Mr Gove insisted the checks must come in on 1 January 2021, at the end of the transition period – but it would be 2025 before new technology arrived.

How tangled is the web they weave
When Tories practice to deceive

In Belgium
There is a government website giving information to exporting and importing companies on which I noticed the advice to Belgian companies to "consider whether it may be more judicious to find alternative suppliers from within the EU" rather than sticking with UK suppliers.

No wonder Boris wants us to look at his loony Bridge.

So HS2 is to go ahead - announcement tomorrow.
I think you mean lucrative contracts will be placed...
And in money will drain into the scheme and somehow be lost, then when the Magic Money encounters it's autumn.
There will be cancellation downline.
Here's an idea for you Boris.
Instead of building your bridge from Scotland to Northern Ireland, why not build it overland from London to Manchester as a high level railway?
Gets over all the obstacles in the way!

Change it into a coffin shifter. No bigger than a pipeline and people lie down. :)

Announce what is claimed to be a major enhancement to moving people between major population centres at the same time as planning to restrict movement as a disease control measure. In comedy, timing is everything.

I’m very concerned about the deportation flights to Jamaica. I’m concerned that there may be empty seats on the planes, or worse still, there may be planes standing idle on the ground which could be used to carry more criminal scum away from the U.K.
