What a load of rubbish that commentary is, as I know from being in the trade then. Everything we were making had to go to pay off our war debts, not sold because it was good but given as what we owed. As a dealer we couldn't get new bikes for the home market, that year we were allocated just one Hercules roadster.

Once we were getting on top of that debt and the tame market of the British Empire disappeared, our industries collapsed in the face of better and/or much cheaper products from elsewhere. Not just bicycles, everything from motorbikes to shipbuilding, our industries just died and we left bankrupt by the early 1970s and turning to the IMF and EU membership to survive.
