I think you still need to get the mount off the bike and onto the helmet unless you are using a GoProHero camera.

When the mount is on the bike it takes all the vibration from the road and even though it looks passable on a Youtube screen when you enlarge it to a TV screen it shakes everywhere.

I took a small film of Jannie riding my bike a while ago and handheld the camera. It was a long way from perfect, in fact it is a long way from being good, but a lot better than when it was mounted to the bike.

I would love to get a HD Hero but I cannot justify the price tag.

This does depend on the bike, the camera and the mounting method and position. The smoothest footage I have was taken as follows:
Bike: Cannondale CX700 (no suspension)
Camera: PSP cam (17g)
Mount method: Elastic band around light
Position: Rear

I do have some pretty good front view stuff as well ... I'll have a look and see if I can put together a collection showing my results on different bikes with different cameras mounted in different places ... I have a spreadsheet which I have sadly neglected which I'll have a look at ... Its on google docs so if you want to have access just PM me your google email address if you have one ...

Just had a look at the spreadsheet. Its got some great info in it. He following cameras are featured: VADO HD, Panasonic HD-TA1, MD80, Toshiba Camileo S10, CARDVR, PSP USB, Sony HDR HC3E, HD 720P key ring, GOPro HD HERO , SWAN PENCAM ...
There is an entry for each video clip and the url link it. This spreadsheet is amazing! .. although sadly neglected ... I last updated it in May last year! ..:(

Here is an example of the PSP rear view on my CX700:
