Went to get the weekly bread supply today, a 26 mile round trip. Temp was just above freezing at 1 degree.

On the way out my hands were freezing but my feet were toasty warm. Picked up the bread, went for a double espresso and then set off on the return. This time my hands were toasty warm and my feet were freezing.................why the difference?

Could it be that when travelling south my circulation works best in the lower half and when travelling north in the top half? Does the espresso hold the clue? Or could it be that as I'm getting old, my heart as decided it can't be bothered to do the whole lot at once and just alternates between top and bottom?

Interesting question - I think you need to know (for starters)

1) vasodilation / vasoconstriction effects of exercise and caffeine
2) heat retaining ability of your gloves vs shoes . So insulation and heat conduction properties.
3) what the Question is (answer being 42 of course

OK I see...............I think:confused:
1 I should have a single espresso? (or possibly a mug of hot chocolate?)
2.I should swap my shoes with my gloves to analyse the difference?
3. Is this a reference to age? If so, way off the mark:(

Im not quite sure of the answer, but I take my hat off to you.....well I would but my head would get cold.......if I had to cycle 26 miles for bread I think I would have bought a breadmaker by now......;)

I've noticed the hands cold/warm effect, but it's to do with the body's ability to open capilliaries in response to cold conditions. I've heard it called the Fisherman's Effect. One way of stimulating it, is to plunge your hands into a bucket of freezing water, then allow them to warm up again, after that you can work in the cold all day long.
It never works that way with my feet, though.

Sorry , being vague and flippant !

What i meant to say is are many, too many , factors at play here and I'm not sure the interplay could be easily tested. By way of example you could do the same ride in same condition and not get same effect

Some variables may be blood sugar and pressure levels. General health / how hard immune system working, Liver function, tiredness levels, stress levels

There is also something called the mammalian diving reflex. In people this is activated by immersion of face in water. But a shower, face wash or heavy rain can trigger. Essentially it's a survival reflex that pulls blood from extremities to core. So having a shower just before you leave can make a difference - the effect then wears off

And this is just your own body before you start looking at external factors!

Which is I made my third comment which was a hitch hikers guide to galaxy reference . I meant you probably need to know the answer to Life, universe as everything to truly get to bottom of this one !

Easier to take a spare pair of socks and some silk inner gloves and put on/off as required !

Wow............where to start!

Dave, you were dead right, I've led a sheltered life

Linda, you are far too clever for this forum, who would have thought of buying a breadmaker! I suspect though, my wife uses the dog/stick method to get me out of the house. The distances are increasing so I could soon be on my way to Cornwall to get some real cornish cream. Gone for the summer, whenever that is.

Scimitar, you've now added something else to my pre ride ritual. Have you really tried sticking your hands and feet in a bucket of iced water before going for a ride?

KirstinS, thanks for the medical bit (frightening) and advice on what to do i.e. put on more clothes!

So, as I see it now, this is what I need to do before going out on the bike.
1.Have a shower
2.Stick my hands and feet in a bucket of iced water
3.Dress up as though I am a leftover from Scott's last expedition before leaving the house muttering 'I am just going outside and may be some time'
4.Or buy a breadmaker and a copy of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and stay indoors.

Stop pretending......you know this is the solution you really really want......lol

Only joking, I know you love cycling long distances, hardly surprising in the beautiful countryside you live in.

However, the idea of possibly being sent to Cornwall for clotted cream is slightly worrying.........however, I always like to look on the bright side.....if your wife insists on the cornish cream trip, could you make sure you register plenty of

CycleCharge | Charge on the move

charge points en route for us please :D

BTW............does your wife cycle ? ;)

Lynda, the views around here are pretty impressive but yesterday with it being overcast, snowing on and off and cold, meandering along looking at the views was not a top priority.

In answer to your question, yes my wife does cycle but she is not stupid like me and only does so when the weather is suitable. At the moment she is getting together her summer cycling wardrobe, whatever that means!

She has a Wisper 705se as opposed to my Oxygen Emate City so it makes for interesting comparisons.

I'm just off to my mother-in -laws now, a round trip of 16 miles, to hang a picture, now where are the ice cubes.......................................?

No don't think I'll bother with that, the weather is sunny now although only 2 degrees.
