I was wondering If I could put more than 17amp through my controller that is rated for 17amp it's says 17a+/- so wondered if doing 18 or 19 would be OK

It should be OK up to 20A as long as you don't have a high speed motor in big wheels.

Nope small 20 inch wheels and an msuc 250w 36v rear hub motor. Do I need ti do anything to the controller or can I just set 18 or 19 amp in the display and crack on

If you have a setting for it, try it, but don't be surprised if you get no difference. If it doesn't work add some solder to the shunt in the controller. Each 10% of its length will give an extra 1.7A.

One would have thought a shunt mod would be needed.
