There was a time when I was considering and rear bike carrier for my VW Golf, I looked into it and apart from the weight of E bikes being a factor there was the added extension number plate and rear light assembly to be considered. Anyway, as many of you know I worked out the cost and opted to use my van to carry our bikes around, in the dry with plenty of room without the hassle and they can be left on the van anytime we are out or just stored there at home.
So! now it`s holiday time in North Norfolk and the tourist are here in there hundreds and many of them carry bikes on car based carriers. Well! I`ve never seen so many bikes being carried that are covering not only the number plate but all the lights as well and to add insult to injury I nearly took the rear wheels off of two bikes being carried offset with half the width of the wheels sticking out from the vehicle. Now that is dangerous and irresponsible in my book. The lanes are narrow around here and so I might even be at risk when riding my bike because most visitors seem to think that all the lanes are one way streets and they will never meet another vehicle coming the other way.(let alone a person walking dogs or a horse rider)
I`m a bit at a loss because in general( not always obviously) dedicated cyclist tend to be quite sensible on the road when they drive motor vehicles. I can only assume that the offenders are just holiday riders but never the less 18" or so of overhang out to the side needs to be clamped down on by the police.
