Chain & freewheel replacement (Wisper 905SE)

This time I remembered to replace the chain on my Wisper after 1200 miles (it was already nearly 0.125" over!). Now I'm at 2200 miles and the second chain is nearly 0.75% over (This time I got a Park Tool CC-3 to check it - its on the verge of fitting the gap - I guess its about 100-200 miles before its over).

With previous push bikes and the Salisbury I ended up carrying on the same chain until 2500 miles and the freewheel block of course had to be replaced as well.. However the block on the wisper seems to be in good shape (the chain isn't jumping on it) and the teeth don't look or feel knackered either (they don't appear to be rounded or hooked).

Do I really need to replace this block as well as the chain at this point, or will I get away with another 1200 miles on the new chain (by which time the block probably definitely will need replacing?

I've also just realised the hole in the freewheel remover tool I have is way too small to even fit over the axle - can anyone suggest one which does correctly fit over the Wisper rear axle?

Well I tried to see if I could enlarge the hole in the freewheel remover but the steel is way to hard for the drill (which is understandable given its tool steel also)..

Not heard back from Norman yet although I expect both him and David are at the Tour de Presteigne.

that said I think my Powacycle Salisbury has the same wider axle and the LBS changed the block on there so a suitable tool must exist somewhere.

I use a Shimano TL.FW30 freewheel removal tool Alex, but it had the same problem of the hole made for 10 mm standard spindles and also being glass-hard.

However, I did manage to hack a 12 mm drill through the hole to enlarge it since there's only 1mm to get out. A bit brutal, I locked the tool into a vice by it's flats, spun up the drill on high speed, and jabbed at the hole repeatedly, getting out a tiny bit each time. Crude, but it only took about four jabs to hack that bit out, the drill bit acting more as a rotary chisel chipping out what was needed.

There is a tool ready to fit, I have one. I can't remember what brand it is off hand but someone on here told me about it, if you search a bit you'll find it recommended for a 905.
It's one of the cheaper brands and I think cost under a tenner delivered.

Hi,

Sorry, but I only just noticed this thread.
Had exactly the same problem sometime ago when I changed the cassette on my Wisper 905se. The tool you need is either a a Cyclepro cpt203 (ebay £6-49 inc delivery) or an ice toolz cassette removal tool for shimano MF cassettes (approx £5-00 + delivery from SJS cycles). Both of these will work as both are designed to use either a 21mm spanner or a 1/2" drive socket set. The larger square hole (provided for the socket wrench) will allow the oversized axle through the hole.
You will find the cassette much easier to undo if you are able to clamp the tool in a bench vice with the wheel placed in the tool. Rotate the wheel (in the right direction ;) ) and you will have far more leverage than most spanners with little risk of slipping or skinned knuckles.

Hope this helps.
