Complete noob help please

I’ve got a budget of around £1000
Some
Might say it’s not enough to get into E-Bikes but having looked online I’ve seen various models and makes which has confused me enormously
Then we have the secondhand market which Usually I’m a fan of however as I have little to no knowledge of these things perhaps it’s best avoided?
Anyway I’m happy to buy online but what if any would you recommend for a £1000 budget ?
Or do I buy a conventional bike and get that kitted out into an electric model

There are people here better equipped to advise, but it will probably help if you can say what use you have in mind - e.g. commuting, touring, trekking or whatever and what style of bike you had in mind. And yourself - young and athletic, or past it and slightly overweight like me?
