Yeah. Until the cold weather set in I was riding with a suit, and dark sunglasses, similar to the first two pics, but with an open face black helmet. Now I don't need the glasses, but wear a large overcoat over the suit!

i had to wear fleece, gloves, helmet (to keep head warm), thick socks, cord trousers and a waterproof/windproof this week. i did wear the dark glasses though !!!! (to keep wind/sleet out of my eyes !).

Yes, the general Dutch attitude to cycling is perfect, they see it just as an alternative to walking, nothing more.

Here we seem to regard it as a separate special activity in it's own right, complete with ceremonial, rites, special clothing and a special language. Will that ever be reversed so that we revert to normal day to day behaviour for bike use? Little chance, ritual and special customs are easily established but difficult to get rid of.

City bike schemes like the London "Boris bikes" might help though.

Here's a couple of pics of me and the bike, by a famous local landmark and a steep hill!

One of the many reasons I had for purchasing my Oxygen was so that I could arrive at my desk suited & booted, rather than sweating and needing to shower & change. In fact, it has smartened me up considerably because I now wear a tie to keep my neck warm! Oh, and this morning a parka over the tout ensemble as it was a couple of degrees below (ooh, my ears!) even here in the smiling south...

I saw one of those studies a while back and London came near the top of the list, not surprising as many cyclists in London are from other countries.

well dressed locals in amsterdam...no helmets, lycra or anoraks in site !!!!
will this ever happen in uk ?
It's all very odd. By the way that these people are dress, they certainly don't give off the impression that they need to cycle because they are too poor to afford a car.

I'm sure they do it because it's so much easier for local journeys. No parking hassle, use of more facilities like cyclepaths and often getting priority over cars at junctions. All in all, local cycle journeys for them are quick, easy, enjoyable and convenient.

Absolutely. Cycling in Amsterdam must be a wonderful experience with its' dedicated cycleways. In fact, one of the challenges for the visitor is the extra vigilance one needs crossing the road as a pedestrian because the cycle routes have a certain difference in logic to the 'normal' roads in the city. Takes a bit of getting used to, but does a good job and I wish we had something like it over here. Unlikely to happen any time soon is my feeling...

At the flick of a switch it can go from pedelec only to pedelec + throttle which makes it more of an electric scooter. But its not powerful enough though quicker than most pedelecs. That pic was taken half way up the hill on Barracks Lane because the bike was struggling with two of us on it and my mate jumped off and took the pic!

I see many well dressed cyclists in Oxford, but thats probably because of the University, but also a huge amount of foreign people. There's loads of the "Lycra Brigade" around, the sorts who can cycle significantly quicker than any ebike! I've been overtaken by many!
