Joking apart I am drawn back to my original plan of using the Sunstar ibike S03 system. I just think it would allow me to ride my bike at more controllable speeds but give me the push I need to tackle the steep hills, and I'm not sure if I want a throttle on my bike as I still want it to feel very much like a push bike.
Have you tried one? It;ll be an expensive mistake if you don't like it. I found it rather weak.

Not tried one yet, I know they have one on a cargo bike at The Electric Transport Shop, think i will make a appointment and give it a try out!
Found this video of one on a velomobile ( think thats what there called ? ) Looks good!
Very flat terrain and fantastic cycle paths though !

I sometimes haul 40kg in my trailer and I used a 500W cyclone crank drive from eclipse bikes

If you have to go up much of a hill with 40kg plus in a trailer there is no way you're going to do that with a 250w crank drive and 3 speed gears unless you are a heck of a lot fitter than me (I am failry unfit though:))

This does seem to be the general consensus on what I want to achieve with electric power. Maybe i just expect to much and am to unrealistic about what electric can do and just be content with riding on the flat and small hills and pushing when i have to. Any hill I need to climb is only going to be fairly short and I can already ride up hills I need to without the trailer but with 20 odd kg on my front rack. I don't want to ride them at 100mph I was just hoping to make it easier and thought electric assist was the way to go.

If the bike is geared fairly low which it sounds like it is, a crank drive will do the job, my 250w crank drive pulls more than 600w when asked, plus you sound like you are not adversed to putting in a few watts yourself :)
If you get a throttle you will also have the option of using it to pull the bike up the hill whilst you walk along side, instead of trying to push the whole rig up the hill.
