You should try one of those orange 'floppy' indicator arms that people had on their bikes in the 70s(?), because they wave around they can be quite disconcerting to a car driver.
personally i would like one of those things that stick out of a Hummer in Iraq....the ones that fire 50 rounds a second !!!

A nice thing about riding in London is the roads are usually quite wide with lower speeds, I rarely ever feel in danger from overtaking vehicles.
Same here. I saw footies video and would have been most uncomfortable with that ride. Despite the odd gripe about bike lanes they are a great improvement.
I only have to cycle a very short distance into the green belt and I can find roads just as bad as the one in the video. Roads are just as rough as well. But bad drivers can catch you out anywhere. The worst incident for me was on a quiet suburban road on a Sunday morning with a driver coming from the opposite direction. he was speeding at about 50 - 60 mph, overtaking parked cars with far too wide a a margin and leaving me so little room he forced me into the gutter and off the road. Fortunately the bike was unharmed..

They're not always reliable... LiveLeak.com - Machine Gun Falls Apart

Just watched footie's videos and have to say they don't phase me that much, perhaps because I've been cycling since I was very little, and boy do my legs ache! (boom, boom)
One thing I try to do when I'm on a road with fast moving vehicles and no pavement or cyclepath to use instead is to keep steady & weave as little as possible, not sure if it helps drivers or not but it sure helps me feel a bit safer. One nice advantage I've discovered about electric bikes is it's easier to keep to a straight line than a non-electric bike.

I've just seen it and it was nowhere near as bad as I expected. It is a little disconcerting that the road is narrow and there is no escape route much of the time but the cars overtaking didn't look dangerous, the road quality is much better than I'm used to as well. Maybe it is an experience thing, dunno.

In my town (Preston Lancs) parking in cycle lanes is totally normal, much more so than parking on double yellows which people often do but only for short periods. People will park cars and vans in cycle lanes for hours on end. On my way to work there is a cycle path (off road) with a car dealership at the bottom of a hill. The car dealer frequently arrays his stock out into the cycle path and turns it into a slalom course . A few weeks ago he was showing customers around cars on the cycle path and they were gormlessly wandering about while cyclist tried their best not to hit them.

Just had a look a Footies's videos. I live and work nearby, but I can't quite place where they were taken. I have to say though that they are main road shots and as such are far more benign than a great many of our roads. The lanes (and mostly we are surrounded by narrow single vehicle lanes) are much narrower, much steeper, very broken and potholed, covered in horse/sheep/cow pats and enclosed by stone hedges. Every vehicle is a large 4x4 and every other driver is wittering away on their mobile. On my 8.5 mile commute I have been clipped by cars who will not wait for a space to overtake you and deliberately shove you into the stone hedge on numerous occasions. This usually occurs on the uphill sections, fortunately, so my speed is relatively low. On one memorable occasion I had to 'bale out' three times on just one trip home :D . On two of those bale outs I was actually physically clipped by the cars - they knew they had done it - and not one of the buggers stopped to see if I was OK  . I now have enough experience to cope better than I did (I recognise many of the cars on my regular commute and know what to expect from some of them - that helps) but it just shouldn't be like that. Basically it's just down to lack of patience, manners and the rise of the 'me first' culture. A step back in time and it would translate into a Titianic scenario of 'shove the women and kids overboard' and every man for himself in the lifeboats.

Guess I'm turning into a grumpy old man :( . May change the 'handle' to Meldrew...:) )

It would be tempting if I wasn't pretty certain that it would end up with me doing a passable impersonation of a flat hedgehog in the middle of a quiet lane, where all appeals for help would result in the usual 'I didn't see nuffink, gov.' response  .
Way too risky......
No, I'll just grin and 'swear' it - I'm getting pretty much accustomed to it now :( .
