Cycle Rack Nut & Bolt Question

As title would suggest does any one know the size of the standard nut and bolts that hold on a cycle rack.

Mine has decided to loose a couple of the bolts and thus the rack is a little wobbly.

I'd prefere to just buy a bag of these at the local store instead of going to halfrauds and spending £4.99 on 4.

Thanks very much

They mostly use 6 mm bolts.
Also do not use bolts that are too long on the bottom mounts as they may interfere with the chain, a couple of times my chain has slipped off the freewheel and locked itself behind the bolts whilst on the move.
Its not easy to get it back out again !

The ones down by the drop-outs are normally 5mm (M5) screws, The ones on the frame at the top near the seat are normally 6mm (M6) bolts in my experience. Take one of your 6 disk screws out. If it fits, it's 5mm. If it flaps about in the hole, it's 6mm.

I have a few of the bolts spare that I always keep which I can use as a tempory measure. However without the nut they will always undo themselves.

I keep various length's with me incase of such a scenario however I just wanted to double check so I can buy a couple more. The bikes doesn't feel that great with a wobbly rack on it ;-) ooooohhhh ;-)

The hole near the drop-out should be 5mm threaded, so you screw the screw right through and put a nut on the back to lock it. Is yours not like that?

Its eactly like that. But i've not tightened the nut enough and its eventually worked its way out through all the bumps and pot holes.

So without the nut it won't hold correctly. Not a massive issue at all just need to get some nuts and bolts.
Hence why I asked what size they were.

I'll take a trip down maplins and get an assortment to save me searching through. Having an assortment I'm sure will come in handy anyway for future tinkering.

Much appriciated on the help!

Probably the reason for those which use 6 mm bolts at the dropout area. They don't have a locknut on the rear and never seem to work loose. Both my most recent bikes are like this, and of course they don't have the potential to foul the chain with no rear protusion.

Hi

on your car the disk brake caliper mounting bolts are held on with loctite or similar thread lock in most new replacement brake pads they supply new bolts with blue loctite on the threads It is a low strength lock if you used Permanent thread lock you would brake the bolts before you could remove them:p

Because when you apply pressure on the threads it sets and when you brake the seal you need to reapply thread lock The squeal you get on disk brakes is a high frequency vibration and would undo the bolts if the went loctited in
