Can anyone give me a spec to use to find a battery for this bike? I'm sure there must be cheaper ones than the manufacturers.

On a forum somewhere I read it was a Dolphin type battery. I bought a 20 Ah Dolphin typer battery but as I expected it didnt fit.

You need to ascertain the maximum current of the controller. The battery then needs to have a maximum current delivery rating of around +50% of this values.
Direct drive motors such as this are notorious for being battery eaters, especially if used in stop start traffic or in hilly terrain. That makes the choice of a good quality battery paramount if you want to see any kind of batterylife longevity.
