If the buttons are getting anywhere, then the only other option is a data cable connection either via the lcd but most likely the controller.

I have started another thread - apologies. If u look at my profile pic. When I hold in buttons 1 and 2 the screen clears and a big '1' appears. I can toggle this up to 4 using the + and - pushing LHS of button 3 returns me to normal screen. I will try different modes tomorrow but could this be some de-limitation? This on a Carerra Crossfire e

VERY interesting Tim, keep us posted on the results tomorrow :)

A couple updates to add here:

1: I tried Tim58's suggestion. It doesn't appear to make any difference, but maybe others can try it too to validate that.

2: I had an email exchange with the battery manufacturers (SR Suntour), which went as follows:

  • Dear Steve, I am sorry but due to legal reasons there is no possibility to remove the speed limitation for the assist. But actually with this motor structure there wouldn´t be a much higher assist speed possible anyways. The motor is built a bit different in order to reduce the weight but this is also limiting the RPM with the assist being active. Best regards, Benjamin.
  • Hi Ben, Thanks for the reply. Off the record, there must be a way to increase the cut-out point, mechanically or software or both. The battery and motor should realistically get you to 30mph or above even with pedal assistance. All i actually want is a bit more on the flats, so I can cruise at maybe 21-22mph. Off the record do you know of a way? I myself am a software developer, am i allowed access to the Java for the controller? Thanks, Steve.
  • Hi Steve, the coiling of the motor is limiting the output from the motor (by RPM). So it´s not just a software issue. This is what I was told – but I am not a specialist for any kind of electronics, so I need to believe what I am told (I am a specialist for suspension products). The software isn´t based on Java as far as I know. The communication protocol is based on UART. Best regards, Benjamin.

So, it looks like I've hit a dead-end in my pursuit, I hope someone else finds a way, as, like everyone else, I'm sure it's possible to eek a few for more MPH for that flats.

Hi Steven - yes I tried going from setting '1' to '4' this morning and I wasn't aware of any change (if there was it was very subtle). These 4 settings must do something though lol! But I agree with your findings, not much change felt.

To request information off the record and then to publish the reply is at best disingenuous ( I could use another term. ).
Small real time applications using microcontrollers need to use highly optimised code, so languages such as Java would be inappropriate and c based assemblers are more common. Some routines may even still be machine coded.
The top speed from a motor is determined by the back EMF voltage , and therefore by the strength of the magnetic field and the number of turns in the winding. The supplied voltage has a direct effect.

"at best disingenuous?...Don't you think that's a little OTT? By off-the-record, I am merely stating not in his official position as an employee of Suntour, but rather in his opinion, you can climb down from your perch there buddy, not every single post on every single forum has to slide into pathetic denigration and sly insult. Let's all have a cuddle, jesus wept!

.. Reflect!. On two occasions in the same message you repeat that request. Let's assume he had been naïve, and did know a method, then you would have published it, he would have been fired
If you are a commercial programmer you would or should be aware of the consequences of inadvertent disclosure.
Now I am not going to get into a slanging match.

You're (incorrectly) assuming 2 things:

  1. I have copied the emails verbatim, with original names;
  2. In the event of the correspondent supplying some clue, I would have posted the email exchange as opposed to just the clue itself.
I left school many years ago, leave the playground histrionics there please mate.

You should have paraphrased what the Suntour guy said rather than publishing it directly.

What he's saying is that it's not a high speed motor. The perfect design would allow 15.5 mph with a flat battery (31V), so with a charged battery (42v), it should max out at 21 mph, but voltage sag when giving power would bring that closer to 20 mph. You can test that by checking the maximum motor speed with the wheel off the ground when the battery is nearly empty. Whatever speed it does, you can multiply that by 40/31 to get the minimum maximum speed. If it hit's the speed cut-off with a flat battery, you can't tell what is the maximum possible. That's why I say the minimum maximum speed.

If the motor was only limited by its winding, then, with the wheel off the ground, the difference in its speed with a charged battery and a nearly empty one would be 40/31.

Hi Guys, I played around with settings aswell.
With setting 1 I had the problem that the Displayed turned itself off after a really short period.
It might be the settings or something else. After turning it back to 0 everything went back to normal, no sudden turn off's.

Hi Guys,
Seems like this topic has dried out with time. Can someone shed some light on how far have we reached with delimiting Carrera crossfire E? On previous post many have said it is possible but none of us keen technophile have been able to achieve. Some solution will be highly appreciated.

What was the outcome?
Throttle and unlimited speed, haven't got round to configuring the display but it probably does about 20mph hot off the charger. Could get even more if I ditch the battery and get a 48v one but it's enough for now. The hardest part is you have to cut all the motor wires and crimp connectors onto them as nowhere seems to do a controller with that particular plug. It's also easy to break the delicate hall wires, I ended up having to solder one. But if you can do all that all you need to do is order a controller with a new display and Pas sensor, throttle if desired and buy connectors for the motor wires and battery wires (you only need the + and - for the battery, just cut the rest off) that match the controller. Cut, strip, crimp, wire it all up, job done.

Oh and you will need a new crankset as a standard Pas disk will not fit between the suntour chainring. Alternatively there is a torque sensor type that goes in the bottom bracket, not sure what they are like

There is a cable on the controler. Thats how it looks like

I don't really care about warranty, so already disassemble it once .
