Hi, just a few words of introduction, currently building an electric bike using a stanna stairlift motor running off four 36v 2.6amp lithium batteries, this runs a chain to the middle crank sprocket, ideally the crank should be freewheeling to avoid pedalling when using electrical power but having a job trying to find a freewheeling crank or the parts to make one, I know the parts are all avaliable but have looked on ebay and the internet but drawn a blank so far, can anyone help please, the idea is to use the bike for work to cut down on emissions and save money on fuel, the batterys will be charged by deep cycle batteries I have desulpated through an inverter for the charger, the deep cycle batteries will be charged by recycled garden light solar panels, I have managed to accumulate about 300 so far, will sign off now look forward for any ideas, regards Nigel

This sounds like a fascinating project Nigel - I'd be grateful for the odd update as you go along

I'm not sure your solar panels from garden lights are going to work - they are such low quality - I'm not sure how well they will series up.

You might be better off just buying a cheap setup from maplins (70quid should do it)

Always worth a whirl with the samll panels though

Read this thread, should give you what you want.

I bought my right hand free-wheeling chain-wheels/cranks from Cyclone.tw. They cost about £75 each and you get two crank-arms (one threaded), completee BB bearing/spindle set and the tripple free-wheeling chain-wheel (one sprocket is for the drive). They're relatively heavy, so if you want a light-weight bike, the ES solution above would be better.
