I discovered this EU source of LiPos through eBay today. Their web site is:

M3Shop

They offer a full selection of LiPos in voltages and amperage suitable for most electric bicycles, and for EU customers their prices are attractive compared with imports from, for example, BatterySpace.com specializes in universal power supplies like rechargeable batteries and chargers in the USA which are subject to additional high courier charges, handling fees, and VAT.

However, like many other German and Austrian sellers they do not accept credit card and Paypal payments, thus denying themselves increased sales in the UK where most banks charge exorbitant fees for transfers from the Sterling to the Euro zone (mine must be the highest at £39 regardless of the amount involved). But see correction below

The other problem of course for non-linguists is understanding the technical details, all given only in German. It is not clear to me how their LiPos charge and discharge when they appear to have only two leads, one positive, one negative, whereas those from batteryspace have separate leads for charging and discharging. They do have the essential protection circuits built into the pack but there are some mysterious references to "balancing" connectors. One other drawback is that their chargers seem to come in low voltage only so that they require an adaptor for connection to the mains carrying which could be a nuisance on tour.

It would be nice if m3shop could provide a short summary in English, and take Paypal (even adding on the 3% surcharge).

Added later: After a close look at their Conditions of sale etc I found the following:

Die Bezahlung kann für registrierte Nutzer per Vorkasse , Kreditkarte oder per Nachnahme( nur Österreich) erfolgen.

which does seem to suggest they do accept credit cards from registered customers. On the other hand I also found a suggestion in their other condtions that they supply only to Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Spain!

Latest Amendment: I have just received this email from Michael Mader of M3 shop:

hi william

thank you for your interessting mail. i also saw your posting on the forum

the short version:
1) we will deliver worldwide, also to UK and scotland
2) we accept credit card (visa and mastercard) and bank transfer with
iban and account number on our account in germany, austria and switzerland

i will also transfer the technical details onf this product into a
english versions but give me some time to translate

regards michael mader

Sounds hopeful.

EU source for electric bicycle LiPos

Quote: Sounds hopeful.

Yes but 30,000mAh (presumably 30Ah) costs £350 plus shipping and there loads of work to do to fit it to ones favourite bike.
Is the price realistic/viable?

I agree, LiPos are not cheap, and a comparison of the EU M3shop price for a 37 volt, 10 amp with a maximum discharge rate of 40 amps with the same thing from US Batteryspace comes out as follows:

M3shop 499 + 15.50 carriage = 514.5 euros = approximately £350 delivered in the EU.

Batteryspace 460 + 68 carriage = 528 dollars = £264 PLUS around 25% for VAT, duty, and handling charges = approximaely £330

On that one therefore Batteryspace is cheaper.

I had been looking at M3shop's !8.5volt 10 amp which costs 181 euros plus 15.50 carriage and comparing it with the Batteryspace offering at 350 dollars plus 68 carriage PLUS 25% etc. That comparison is muddied by the fact that M3shop's version claims to provide only 20 amps maximum for only 30 seconds, whereas Batteryspace claims up to 40 amps maximum with no specified limit. However both batteries apparently use the same PCM to limit discharge, and when you delve deeper into the Batteryspace site it says it imposes a 9 amp limit!

Batteries for electric bikes are not an easy subject, as well as being expensive!
