I finally picked up my new Wisper 705SE on Saturday - around 54 days from when it was ordered. Was beginning to give up hope and then on Friday the lbs phoned to say that it was ready to collect :) . duly collected on Saturday and used to go to work on today.

verdict so far: much better than the powabyke, more comfortable and not as much weight on my wrists. Longer range too, does the round trip on one charge (29.4 miles). It's dropping to one LED on the charge indicator on an incline near home but recovers on the flat ( back to 2 ). So far so good.

One bad point is that it is pedal assist only ( set for new EU regs I guess). Am I correct in thinking that those regs are not in force in the UK yet? Can I get the throttle only mode that the previous version had?

welcome to the club!

the handle bar lights are not a good indicator of battery charge, they will disappear under load, hill climbing etc...and recover. The LED's on battery are a more reliable indicator.

So your bike has no throttle fitted.....This is a worry! sounds like you have been given a Euro spec bike by mistake.....

Ref. Wisper 705se throttle

I think Eddieo is right. I've assembled four 705's in the last couple of weeks and they were all twist-and-go as well as pedelec with three levels of assist. I should also add the 705 is a cracking good bike to ride.

Les P: As a matter of interest, is your 705 fitted with a half width throttle on the right handlebar?. If it is, you need to fish about in the air scoop under the controller housing and see if the purple/purple wires are connected. If these are connected, the throttle ( if fitted ) is disabled. These two purple wires need to be disconnected for the throttle to work.

If no half throttle is fitted, then it is as member Eddieo has suggested, you have been sold a European specified machine. At this moment in time, you are perfectly entitled to ride a machine with independent throttle control in Britain. Even when the new legislation takes effect, it will not be applied retrospectively, machines purchased before its implimentation will still be legal to ride in Britain.

I have just checked the 705se spec. on Wispers website, it clearly indicates the 705se has an independed throttle fitted. May I suggest you contact your supplier and ask for the machine to be changed.

If you feel unsatisfied with this situation, I would strongly recommend you contact David Miall, Wisper Managing Director, I'm quite sure he will want to ensure you have the machine you really wanted.

Finally, I can't understand why you had to wait so long, 705's have been available for immediate delivery here in Swindon for many months.

All the best
Bob

My guess is he has a throttle, it's just in pedelec mode (purple wires connected). The reason being that even in pedelec mode the throttle is used to regulate the amount of assist the rider wants. It just won't work without pedalling. Of course, if set to 80% then it will only bring in the last 20% taking the bike to 100% power.

Best regards.

Vikki.

Yes on this 80% split. I have read on here that the new bikes have 3 settings? 3 with a 100% setting would really help with wrist ache and is a welcome change.

so Les has it got 3 settings and a half throttle? and has it front suspension? as new 705's have this as well.......

The 705se has three levels of assist, this is selected on a console mounted on the left handlebar which also incorporates the battery level meter. Should you wish to conserve battery power on long downhill slopes, the electrics can be switched off on the console. When switching on, the assist level defaults to the lowest setting. The throttle works independant of the pedelec allowing twist 'n' go riding.

The 705se is fitted with suspension forks, polycarbonate chainguard and skirtguard. As previously mentioned, the 705 is a delightful machine to ride. The grin factor is definately 'cheshire cat'. :D

I do indeed have the 3 settings, half throttle, front suspension and disc brake. The throttle does work but not independently of the pedals, it is possible that there is something amiss in the controller.

The 100% setting is very useful to me too and is used on the way to work.

You need to disconnect the purple wire, and your problem will go away. Hopefully Eddieo, or somebody else with a 705, will tell you where the connector is located. On the 905 you remove the cover plate below and behind the bottom bracket to locate it.

I don't know where Les lives but I think the issue is most likely what sense of urgency the LBS placed on getting the order delivered. if they are new to e-bikes and are already making the bulk of their profits from expensive racers and ther like they may not see it as the most urgent sale to complete.

Those living in West and SE England are spoilt for choice TBH with the amount of good e-bike dealers and bikes in stock (hence why I got mine online from SE England as there are less dealers in East Anglia, and Cambridge is nearly as far away from here as London!)

I am in Crewe in Cheshire, the LBS has been selling electric bikes for around 12 years now (the only bike shop in Crewe selling electric bikes). The owner did prod Wisper from time to time but did not always get a reply. He has only just started stocking Wisper bikes though.

I don't think it will, he got another couple of Wispers in at the same time as mine and those are sold too.

Turn the bike upside down, the purple wires are always just inside the air scoop. This is done to make it easier to get at. Up till now, we have never needed to remove the cover plate. Sometimes they are connected, sometimes not, we check this connection as part of the PDC.

Thank you, job done. Throttle only mode now works. The chap at the LBS may not know this as they are new to Wisper bikes.

to be fair it does appear Wisper is a very lean company and unless you monitor here its hard to tell whether David is in the UK or in China or other foreign nations - I think they are getting to the stage where their support workload is increasing due to loads of new models being sold and they need to recruit more UK-based staff to handle customer queries in a timely manner..
