Hi Team,

I am looking to buy a claud butler urban 100 and convert the front wheel to an electric wheel. My question is the bike has a quick release dropout on existing front wheel, I will change this wheel to electric, do i need to do anything else apart from installing a torque arm? Is the dropout spacing sufficient?

Generally, are wheels/bike with quick release front wheels treated differently when converting to electric?

Thanks and Regards

I don't know the Urban 100 forks, but standard bike hub spindles are 10 mm, hub motor spindles 12 mm. However, the hub motor spindles are flatted on the sides so will fit into the dropout if you align the flats to front and rear.

If the forks have slight recesses for the QR ends, they wont align vertically with the new wheel nuts since the top of the larger spindle size will prevent the spindle going up far enough into the dropouts. Therefore you may have to file out 1 mm of the top of the fork dropout to get symmetrical alignment of wheel nuts and fork outers. If doing that, make sure the file out of 1 mm is equal both sides so the rim sits centrally between the forks.

Hopefully the forks are strong enough for conversion, but the most important thing is to fit a good anti-torque arm as you intend.

Just the one will be fine, strapped securely to the fork leg to prevent spindle location.
