An all party parliamentary inquiry committee has been formed to hear evidence and examine all the factors necessary to increase cycling safety and popularise cycling. The outcome will be a report to the government on what is necessary, the government apparently favourably inclined:

Admirable intent of course and who, if asked, would refuse to put their name to such a petition? Anyone who ever watched "Yes Minister" or "Yes, Prime Minister" will be acutely aware of how far down the pecking order such matters are when politicians and civil service mandarins choose priorities.

Unless there is a previously unthought of revenue for the treasury in it, it's difficult for me to see much rapid progress with this issue. So far, we can be sure only that the government would be favourably inclined to receive a report from an all-party committee.

Nor me, but it's nice to know that the issue is in mind where it matters. Most importantly, it's an issue which fits well into the mainstream UK government and EU commission intentions for road accident reductions and greener transport. That does help with both impetus and funding.
