Hi,

In considering all the different options for sorting out an e-bike, I may need to get a motor built into a wheel.

Not having done this before I have no idea how much this would cost.
So can anyone give me an indication of how much it costs say to get a motor hub built into a 700c front wheel?

Any recommendations for places that will do it? (I'm in North London)

Cheers

Hi Steve
I don't have any idea how much it would cost, but you could try calling Mike at the Electric Transport Shop as he is quite near you - 183 York Way (corner with Camden Rd) London N7 9LN Phone: 0207 4822892. That's where I bought my Wisper, and he's been very helpful with any issues...
Cheers,
Howard

Having recently ordered the bits so I can build myself a 700C wheel for my Nuvinci Hub (on order), I can give you some help with the cost..

Mavic A119 Rim - £17
22mm Rim Tape - £1.05
Spokes - £12

All the rest would be labour, but I couldn't hazzard a guess at that yet as I won't be building my wheel until the weekend.

My local bike shop wanted about £20 for the labour. £60 all in (with you providing the motor of course) should be about right I think.

ETS London don't do it on site so probably won't be very interested in the work. My recommendation is SJS cyles by mail order, they modified my hub as well to make the wheel stronger.

I would recommend SJS for wheelbuilding too. I have had a few motors built into 20 inch wheels, and the price is around £70 to 80 including return postage, usually all done within a week.

I am arranging to have a Shimano hub dynamo built in to the front wheel of my Wisper 905se. My LBS, quoted me £15 plus spokes to do it, so all in (obviously excluding the dynamo!) was about £28-00. I think that is pretty reasonable.

In North London I would recommend Two wheels good in crouch end. I think they have a branch somewhere else in North London (stoke newington?). No problem with installing the electric motor. I supplied the nano motor, they supplied the wheel and worked out the spoke length. It was an odd size and SJS supplied them - you may have better luck with a more standard size. Cost about £20-25 labour and they did a good job, no broken spokes after a few thousand miles of heavy use. Highly recommended and better than sending the wheel off as you can see what you are getting.

Excellent! That's my LBS (I was going to phone them next)! Met a Giant Twist rider outside too. (only my 2nd e-bike spotting).
