Hello. wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Golden Motor conversion kits. Received the recommendation from a friend a few years ago and wonder how the company and their products are now fairing. Many thanks.

It is a direct drive which is efficient and reliable for fast driving on the level, but tends to be inefficient for real world use (especially hills) and need a hefty battery to power it. Also direct drive are typically heavy, gross kit weight of 11kg mentioned.

Probably better than the really cheap direct drive kits you see on ebay for not much over £100, but very pricey.

Thanks for that. They have front and rear hub options available. Would you advise one over the other? What alternative brands are recommended - that provide similar spec kits at a lesser price?

I'd advise kits from Woosh (https://wooshbikes.co.uk/) or (usually a little cheaper) Yose. Either will come out cheaper than Golden Motor once you factor in carriage (also not sure what duty there might be.) They won't be equivalent, they will use geared hub motors which are much lighter and much more suited to normal use. They offer front hub, rear hub and crank drive motor kits.

The best kit will depend a lot on the bike and the kind of riding you want to do with it. Without further details I'd say rear hub (even though we've got a front hub tandem and crank drive solo bike).

Thanks. Will look into both alternatives. The bike is inexpensive and will be used for flat leisure rides with the potential to grow into hillier ones. That may be further down the line. I have bought and sold three types of mid-drive e-bikes and am now keen to experiment with conversion kits. Was gifted an old kit - 26" front hub motor (unbranded other than XDYPW01), throttle control (Tianjin Songzheng Elec Co) and 37V phylion battery (rear rack mounted). Its being lying unused and uncharged for many years. Charger does not appear reliable but would not be surprised if all cells were dead. Are there any testing kits for batteries that you'd know of/recommend? Have two unconverted tandems - an old Pashley and a Thorn.
