Hi all,

I would really appreciate it if you could advise on my issue with charging on my Greenedge CS2 ebike.

The bike has had very light use, mostly recently during the past few months of lockdown! It has been fully charged in between rides, but suddenly last week it appears to have a completely flat battery that won’t charge.

• Charger doesn’t appear damaged and is delivering voltage
• When plugged in, the charger shows the green light constantly, or occasionally it shows red light briefly before green
• The battery (Greenedge CS2 Battery Lithium-Ion36v 9Ah, 2Pin old style) is charged and reading 35V on voltmeter
• When battery is switched on and LED charge indicator is pressed, it flashes once and then nothing
• The control pad won’t turn on
• I've checked the terminal connection wiring/connections appear to be fine

Any advice would be much apprecited :)

35v probably means that it's not charging for whatever reason. One potential reason is that the charging port in the battery is damaged. have a look in there. You should see the pin in the middle and the blade next to it. The blade is like a leaf-spring. As the jack goes in, it gets pushed to the side and slides on the side of the jack. Occasionally, the spark welds it to the hack, and when you pull the jack out, the jack distorts it and pulls it onto the pin, which vaporises part of it.

Different factories wire these batteries differently, so it's not possible to say what the fuse arrangement is. There's often a main fuse at the bottom (sometimes not actually wired in). It's in the slot that runs down the battery, where you can see its cross to unscrew it. It's worth checking it. If it's OK, you need to unscrew the bottom black plastic piece from the aluminium case and look in there to see if there's a fuse attached to the red wire coming from the back of the charge port. If there is one there, it's probably blown and needs replacing, so check it.

If that doesn't reveal the issue, something more serious is wrong with it, in which case the top has to be removed and more detailed testing needs to be done to reveal the cause, but the outlook wouldn't be promising.

The battery should charge to 42v so you need to check the charger again first with a meter, if the charger doesn't give a reading of 42v from the charge pin then it is faulty.

Thank you so much for the quick responses. I’ve managed to narrow things down further based on your comments. The charger is outputting 42V ok, and I’ve replace the main fuse and checked there is not a second one inside the plastic base.

However, it does appear that the charging port is possibly damaged, as vfr400 says. The metal blade is possibly too far back, and maybe even jammed/welded into the plastic – the charger plug certainly feels a little loose in there. Is it possible for me to try to prise it off without electrocuting myself!? Will removing the fuse make it safe? Or is there a better way I can improve the connection?

Really appreciate your advice!

You won't do any damage if it isn't plugged in to the wall.
Show us a pic of the charger port.

It's a bit difficult to photograph - here's my best attempt! Are you sure it's safe - I just put a screwdriver in and got a spark??!

The easiest way is to pull back a bit of the insulation on the inside and check the voltage on the back of the connector. Do it with and without the charger connected. Let us know the results.

It doesn't look right in your photo, but not very clear. It looks like the blade might be broken off. there shouldn't be that straight horizontal line at the top of the hole.

Some photos in here that are fairly clear, plus i think this is the correct replacement if you need it:

Beg pardon Initially replied as I thought the charger port was the item at fault.
Yes the battery port one shouldn't willy nilly poke metal objects in.

The battery charge pin looks worn.
