Not sure where to post this. Hope here doesn't cause too much stress

My 20 quid waterproof cateye backup fell off yesterday. And was promptly run over by 2 cars and a van :(

This one

Gutted but I do like to hack things so I collected the bits and the triple led unit had survived. Using a few ag10 button batteries, wire and solder I ha e hacked into my helmet. It's now in a 2cm x 1.5cm x 1.5 cm space including the batteries. Like this

My point, I am getting there honest, is this. With the rise of led and the cr123 battery how long before we stop with AA and even AAA batteries ?

You need 3 of each to equate to one cr123. Lights and other devices could be much smaller and more powerful by using them.

I've hacked EL inverters , indicators and lights to use them and will do same to helmet light if the ag10 provide to short a burn time

I like small and powerful - down with AA and long live cr123 !

Actually, cr123's are on the way out, with worldwide production falling by nearly 10% for the last 5 years.

AA's on the other hand are increasing and in particular AA nimh rechargeable low self discharge (eneloop etc) showing strong demand.

I think I'll be fine for cr123's though for the foreseeable future, I've got a stash of about 50

There's a huge installed base of devices using AA and AAA and more coming out every day - I don't see them disappearing any time soon.
Allied to that, the steady onward progress of battery tech has seen the usability and lifespan of both sizes improve dramatically over the past decade.

Ultrafire batteries and other 18650 cells are now being used more and more for torches and gradually working their way to other applications.

Be a long time before the AA disappears, though. If cowboy outfits like ***fire were banned from the marketplace it would go a long way to reassure the buying public that the things were safe.
