Hi all, new ebike rider here and looking for some advice.
just bought a 2020 sduro hard nine 5. Yamaha pw-st.
can anyone tell me how the front crank works. Does this have a freewheel separate from the motor ? The pedals can be spun backwards without the chain turning. Only reason I ask is the slight lag on crank engagement feels strange compared to a normal bike, and I can feel the drive engagement and sometimes here a noise. I suspect it is normal but can’t find info online on how the front crank assembly works. It’s hard to describe what I’m feeling but any help / info would be great. Thanks

it is not the same motor but will give you a idea of what is inside and how it works.

Hi sound wave thanks for that. I was speaking to u before on here regarding the sizing if u recall. Turns out I could only get a 29er so went for the 44cm frame which fits spot on. I wasn’t keen on a 29er at first but took a chance after a bit of reading up and now im transformed. Really does trundle over everything. Still got my 650b standard bike though. Does your emtb have a freewheel on the front sprocket ?

I have the sduro trekking with the pwse Yamaha motor.
when you start to pedal after free wheeling there is a sort of.clunk which is the motor engaging. This doesn’t happen on the Bosch motors I believe,
the Yamaha motor is noisy aswell.
nothing to worry about apparently.

Thank you for your reply, I think you are describing exactly what I’m experiencing. I’m kind of figuring it’s just the free play being taken up in the freewheels. Was just wondering if it’s normal as I’m new to ebikes. I’m sure the front crank has a freewheel as well as the motor and the back cassette.

to be honest I’m fairly new to ebike a aswell. I’ve done 1500 Miles in just over 3 months, alls going well at the moment, fingers crossed.
the only annoying thing about the Yamaha is the motor being noisy.
I have the 70Nm se motor.

I’m not too bothered about the noise from the motor having driven electric cars it’s fairly normal and don’t mind I was just more concerned with the take up of drive clunk, looking more into it it seems normal as u say
