FRONT AND REAR V BREAKS

QUICK RELEASE GIANT SADDLE

24 SHIMANO QUICK FIRE GEARS AND COMBINES BRAKES

SHIMANO CRANKS

SHIMANO ACERA DERAILLEUR

GIANT HEAD SET

26" QUICK RELEASE ALLOY WHEELS

my question is how easy or straight forward is it to make this bike into an electric bike - I am not technically minded or haven't a clue  on these sort of things so are there any websites or YouTube vids to show step by step what you require and how to put together so any advice would be much appreciated also is there anybody in the Devon area that might be able to build me an E bike with the right kit purchased. :)

what part of Devon are you at?

The bike looks pretty standard, so shouldn't be too problematicatical.

My guess, quite easy to convert. V brakes make things slightly easier.

Have a look at BMS battery (google it) and see what price for a hub conversion kit. You will need a battery as well.

A bpm/cst hub motor kit and a 10ah battery will come in under £500 delivered. Probably give you a 20 - 30 mile range.

Not saying that's the only answer, but it's as good a place to start as any.

I'm in East Devon and could build it for you if you like.

Unfortunately Bayrider we don't have a kit that comes within your budget, but you can download the eZee kit installation guide from our website here http://www.cyclezee.com/ezee-downloads.html and the Ansmann You tube assembly videos here YouTube Videos - electric bikes and conversion kits.

Hopefully they will give you some idea of what is involved.

Can you also tell us what are your requirements?
- what's the total carrying weight (including you)
- total distance between charge
- desired speed
- max distance
- type of road? Like is it city commuting with a lot of red light, or very hilly area? Maybe only straight road?

Then we can advise you on available kit on your budget and if you have to increase it

thank you cycleezee

that is of great help so what would be best or what can i fit to the Giant Bike front hub or rear bearing in mind it is a light weight bike would that effect the front with movability if using a front hub, also what wattage would you suggest for this bike and going up hills around TORBAY. Will the tyres I mentioned be correct to use and make the ride smoother and better? thank's again John

Bayrider, the 8fun kit should fit fine on your bike and they are p*** easy to fit. I just fitted this kit myself knowing nothing about ebikes and it went on my hybrid easy as.
For £435 delivered you get the front hub motor fitted into a wheel, bottle battery, brake levers with cut out switches, controller, pedel sensor, led display and thumb throttle. Basically everything you need.
To simplify things, I never used the pedel sensor or the brake switches and just fitted the thumb throttle.... the kit works great and I get a 30 mile range.

hi cwah

Indeed these are approx but weight including me I guess 13/14st
average commute 7.5 each way
speed I guess 18/22 mph not really sure to be honest
distance say 25 / 30 miles more if possible say 30/40 not essential
all tarmac road numerous sets of lights say 8 sets and 4 / 5 average hills 2 fairly steep

does that make things clearer .... thank you again

Hi Bayrider,

For hill climbing you need a motor with plenty of torque and the eZee's have that, they are the best kits available for under £1000 and they come with a 14Ah battery as standard.

If most of your riding is on tarmac, then I would go FWD, this gives in effect 2 wheel drive and steering issue is relatively minor. If you do a lot of off road on loose and slippery surfaces, then I would suggest RWD with more weight over the driven wheel you will get better traction.
The tyres that you have will be fine although the eZee kits come with a Schwalbe Marathon Plus as standard.

Hi Yamdude

Mind me asking where you purchased the 8fun kit I was looking at the p.a.s with senser but not wanting to disturb / remove the crank and pedals so this is not essential then I take it and is the thumbe throttle included in the kit or?

The speed with this kit is legal at 15.5 mph max, although mine does about 1mph faster than that.

I agree with cyclezee. Ezee v2 v3 is the best motor available for hill climbing set up.

If I had the budget I'd buy an ezee myself.

For 25-30 miles you definitely need more than 10AH... unless you're good at pedalling (that's not my case).
I'd get at least 15ah or 20AH to be on the safe side.

As mentioned previously, on budget a bpm from bmsbattery would be a good set up althought not as good as the ezee but would be closer to your budget.

I think your main budget will be on the battery. You can check on the simulator to estimate how much you would need:
ebikes.ca Hub Motor and Ebike Simulator

Compare either a BPM36V500W or EzeeV2(26") motor and a 36V20AH battery. You'll see you can achieve about 32 miles distance no pedaling at 19mph.

You can see from the chart the Ezee seriously outperform the BPM for hill climbing (Newton/metre value in blue). So during hills it will be more efficient.

Hey thank's for that if I can get my head round all the detail hehe but just to mention I do a lot of peddling and have no issues with such at the moment does that change things with the AH of the battery? also with the bottle battery is this easy to replace when necessary... thank you again

there is a little slider where you can adjust the amount of "throttle" (or pedalling) you would use. Just have a play around and see how many AH you need.

Ultimately, if you're a good enough cyclist, you don't need any AH

ps: I never used any bottle battery so can't advise on it
