I've previously been surprised and envious as The Netherlands e-bike market grew beyond 1 in 8 bikes sold, but now in 2014 it was a staggering 1 in 6 of all bicycles sold, and of all bikes on the road, over one in 5 are now claimed to be e-bikes. The Dutch are certainly having a love affair with them.

I went to Belgium twice last year. In April, hardly saw an ebike other than German and UK visitors.
In November, I saw about 20 locals on ebikes.
I don't know how long a bike will last with ordinary care, but it is rare to see an old looking bike there.
Possibility is that people buy a new bike every so often, and will not buy an ebike until their old one (or their legs etc.) is worn out

Yes, the Belgians are certainly well behind the Dutch in the e-bike market. The Danes were late starters too, but are now rapidly making up for lost time.

Germany though is the second largest market, again dwarfing ours.

If we'd kept pace with The Netherlands, the UK would have had almost 500,000 e-bikes sold last year, instead of perhaps 30,000 if estimates are true.

Story of my life, when I was young enough no-one wanted to know, but since I've been old enough not to care any more, the interest has been constant. :(

You are one up on me then flecc, but then you have a couple or more years on me, so things may improve yet.
